UPDATE -September 25, 2025, 10:43 AM: I have learned that police were dispatched to this parking garage at 12:41 PM on September 23, 2025 to investigate a report of a 2nd-degree assault. Montgomery County police have still not commented publicly on this incident, or why a total garage closure was necessary.
UPDATE - 2:30 PM: The garage has reopened as of 2:15 PM. Montgomery County police have not yet commented publicly on the reason for the closure.
Montgomery County police officers have sealed off all entrances to the Cordell-St. Elmo Public Parking Garage 40 at 4935 St. Elmo Avenue in downtown Bethesda. Crime scene tape has been placed across the entrances on Cordell and St. Elmo Avenues, and police cruisers have been parked across those driveways to block access. Montgomery County recently scrambled police radio communications, so information about what is happening is no longer accessible to the public. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Just saw this as well. At least 20 Moco police cars in the vicinity
Just drove by both garage entrances. At least 20 Moco police cars in the vicinity
Great! Thanks Elrich & Co.
Well, they didn't roll out a couple dozen police cars for nothing not to mention closing the entire garage off. If they trapped a robbery suspect in there, I'd love it.
Any criminal would work for me.
Brownie is on it, says "Rearrest the usual suspects."
Seems we should be commending the police for a robust response.
Grrrrrrr. . . encrypted radios. Thank goodness those crime victims are having their privacy protected, and the police are now safe from harm. Oh, you regular, law-abiding citizens? Keep moving and keep quiet --don't ask questions. We'll tell you what we decide you need to know. The rest will remain a mystery.
Collars for dollars…
Very efficient use of resources!
The proverbial sledgehammer to crack a peanut.
Knee-jerk (emphasis on the "jerk") criticisms of politicians and the police, before any details come out about what prompted this response. Pathetic.
If you're shutting down a packed garage during lunch on a weekday in downtown Bethesda, more communication is needed on the reason why by police.
I think there were 20 Moco police cars there, moribund. Nice work Brownie!
Did they nab the perp(s)?
3:30 The 'call of the question' revolves around no information on this and most all other County and State crime, wake up, man.
Am still patiently waiting on details, just as we have been waiting details on many, if not most or all previous crime around here. Fwiw, in another crime article herein, there's not even descriptions of the perps put out by our secretive po-po. Hey, you know they should work for us and not the criminals.
@3:30 PM You must be the 'off the cuff' police spokesperson!
Apparently not, you're here.
9/24 @ 17:20 --still waiting.
Why that's 90% of the fleet!
Not so fast! They are located just around the corner. . .
