Poll finds Maryland voters nostalgic for the Larry Hogan era

A new poll conducted by the University of Maryland and The Washington Post had good news for U.S. Senate candidate Larry Hogan (R). The results indicated that registered Maryland voters were much more pleased with the direction of the state under former Gov. Hogan than they are during the current term of his successor, Gov. Wes Moore (D). At the end of Hogan's first four-year term in 2018, 63% of Maryland voters thought the state was moving in the right direction. Only 46% believe Maryland is moving in the right direction as of March 2024.

In 2018 under Hogan, 29% of voters said Maryland was "on the wrong track." In 2024, 44% now believe the state is moving in the wrong direction. The poll was conducted between March 5 and 12, 2024, and surveyed 1004 registered Maryland voters. Legislators returning to their pre-Hogan ways of raising taxes, along with ongoing inflation pressures and suddenly-shaky state finances, may explain some of the nostalgia for the former Republican governor's era. A FY-2025 budget proposal from the Maryland General Assembly has proposed $350-$450 million in new taxes and fees, which Hogan contrasted on Twitter with his record of cutting taxes in each of his eight years in office, totaling $4.7 billion in tax relief.

The poll results shed more light on why Hogan is currently leading Democratic frontrunners David Trone and Angela Alsobrooks in polling for the U.S. Senate race. Hogan's late entry into the contest, and his lead in the polls, have moved Maryland from the irrelevant column nationally into one of the most-watched states as the November election approaches. Maryland could well determine whether Democrats or the GOP control the U.S. Senate in 2025.

Hogan has bitten off more than he can chew in this race, especially after leaving a budget deficit in the governors seat.

JAC - who claimed Trump was "easily" going to win reelection and that Elrich was "definitely" not going to be reelected - just sank Hogan's campaign. Might as well drop out.

@ 7:43 AM - $5 billion surplus was left for the tax and spend folks. They quickly spent and are now aiming to tax. Enjoy your increased bills.

No self-respecting Trump supporter would vote for Hogan and no self-respecting Biden supporter would vote for him either. There's zero chance he'll win by carrying the "meh, whatever" vote.

Seriously? You blocked my comment because I pointed out how you heavily moderate? I'm like 20% of your clicks, you dope.

10:01 Go back and finish your bowl of MSM pablum, setting aside National 'election 'irregularities,'' your boy Elrich, the 'popular' incumbent won by like 11 votes.

Anonymous said...

Even if Trump really lost it was by less than 35,000 votes* (giant asterisk here!) How many votes did Elrich get to win? I remember it as being pretty pathetic for an incumbent.

10:01 - Trump will crush the Dem nominee that may not even be Biden. Hogan is leading in every local poll. And the absolutely clueless MoCo electorate voted D no matter what. Talk about buyer's remorse. Elrich is the most ineffective, do nothing county exec maybe in history.

7:07: Yes, I do heavily moderate - that's why there is an open forum here as long as civility prevails. I cannot find the comment by JAC you keep referring to; I see no record of him using that word.

Oh no! Now JAC just doomed Trump yet again!

Robert Dyer said...

7:07: I stand corrected. I was looking for it on the article about that topic.

JAC said...

9:05 - What does that even mean? Wake up! Joe Biden, if he actually ends up the nominee, will get crushed by Donald J. Trump. Everyone knows that even everyone in the WH and Dem party. Will they insert Gavin "my hair is perfect" Newsome? Trump destroys him too.

10:04 - That's ok. You're the blogger and I respect your moderation of any comment. I was merely pointing out that Trone cannot win having used a very old and very derogatory term towards a certain ethnic group. That and he's going up against one of the most popular governors in recent MD history. We've seen campaigns implode before with comments like that.

Thank you for the correction and removal of JAC's comment.

12:03 - We can all look forward to comments from others, on other stories posted to this blog, similarly being removed. Personal attacks and otherwise inappropriate posts can, should and will be deleted. Thank you Robert!

Lord grant me the confidence of JAC, where no matter how many times my political predictions are wrong, I still believe the candidate I like best is "definitely" going to "crush" any opponent. Will DJT lose by 4 million, 7 million, or 10 million+ votes? We'll find out soon enough.

6:54 - Just reading the tea leaves. Alsobrooks is done. Hogan will win handily over Trone.

"No self-respecting Trump supporter would vote for Hogan" I would never vote for Hogan because he's an opportunistic back stabber and part of everything that is wrong in Washington. So what if he's a Republican, I have zero respect for him. Democrats, on the other hand, will vote for a dead body if there's a D next to their name, they do have party discipline, no question about it.

Anonymous said...

Funny you say that about Democrats, considering we're talking about Hogan - who was elected twice in one of the bluest states in the US, even at a time when Republicanism has become synonymous with sedition.

@6:37 As usual, the frothy trump supporter is dead wrong. Hogan won his last gubernatorial election BECAUSE 20% of democrats voted for him. Polling has him getting 25% of D votes. You can spout nonsense, or look it up and get yourself educated. He's a good candidate that makes sense, isnt a fascist authoritarian like your orange turd god, has done well for Maryland in the past, and isnt a cult follower. He'll win again because of democrats.

Anonymous said...

Fascist Authoritarian? Like the current president who defies the Supreme Court and does what he wants anyway? Can you say Dictator? Too funny. And as far as Democrats voting for Hogan, nothing more needs to be said.

5:39, it's apparent you spend too.much time in our Beltway, or in Charm City. You need to visit the rest of the State. That's President Big Orange Turd and Senator Hogan, to you next year.

12:33 - Truth speaker. Drives them nuts doesn't it? Ha.

Anonymous said...

Right. Joe Biden is so sleepy and doesn't know where he is and also a mastermind dictator in charge of the globalist blood drinkers association or whatever. What a truth speaker 12:33 is.

JAC liking his own anonymous posts again.

Actually, Trone's racial slur is having an impact. Good. Angela. Alsobrooks has got to be the worst candidate ever. Better for Hogan against her.

Anonymous said...

But...but..."Alsobrooks is done." JAC said so. He's only 100% wrong, 100% of the time. But now a whole 24 hours has passed and now JAC says Trone is going to lose to her. So does that mean he's definitely going to win?! The flip-flopping is messing everything up! At least we know either of them would easily beat Hogan, according the the 100% wrong rule.

JAC said...

4:44 - Um, you got to pay closer attention. Polls come out and polls change. Simply as that.

Speaks in absolutes, yet flip-flops with the breeze. Must be a Trump supporter.
