Does Lidl rhyme with idle? The German grocery chain's future downtown Bethesda store at 7625 Old Georgetown Road at Bethesda Place appeared to be nearing completion last fall, with shelving and other displays installed. But work suddenly ceased, and the store has sat idle since. There were a number of rumors circulating to explain the delay, none of which have been confirmed. In fact, Lidl declined to respond at all when I contacted its corporate office. Then, last Wednesday, a forklift was seen driving around inside the store, and workers began moving a new large display island into place.
By yesterday, a number of additional items had been installed, including new interior signage. A small Lidl display with a brand logo was visible inside the Old Georgetown Road vestibule of the store, of the type that might hold weekly store advertising circulars for customers to pick up as they enter. Bethesda still doesn't appear on the chain's Grand Openings page, but the activity suggests it will soon.

Lidl, Lidl, Lidl, I made you out of clay!!!
Hahahaha!
I’ve spoken to bethesda place management several times about why it’s been a year and a half in the making and they place the blame squarely on Lidl. Would make sense since they said Lidl has been paying rent. I’m going with the fiscal year accounting rumor…suspicious they started construction activities again after June 1st.
They were setting up refrigeration in the place last week as well.
Every grocery store near the new Wegmans is closed or closing soon. Lidl doesn't fit the downtown Bethesda district very well as has been said. It's a budget store with limited variety. WF, Organic Butcher, TJ, and the full size grocers like Giant, Teeter and Safeway are where folks shop. That was a Safeway for a long time and was way back too actually and should be again. Lidl and Aldi have their place I suppose but not on old Georgetown Road. Rockville Pike maybe.
I agree with JAC that LIDL simply does not belong in Bethesda. An Upper Middle Class Community like Bethesda is not appropriate for either LIDL or ALDI.
But it has nothing to do with Wegmans.. Wegmans is either all the way down in NW DC or all the way up in North Bethesda (YES, the NEW ONE !)
Wegmans has nothing to do with it and is a distance away from Bethesda.
Even the new one in DC, down Wisconsin by Van Ness is usually pretty sparsly used. It doesn't help that the employees are kinda thuggish. I hope we can recruit better up here, but me thinks maybe part of their hesitation might be centered around the pool of employees.
Fix your compass, the new Weg is not, I repeat NOT in North Bethesda. It is IN the City of Rockville. Oh, and btw, "Every grocery store near it is NOT closed or closing soon". Get real!
9:22 - The Safeway right down the street from the new Wegmans closed and the Harris Teeter on Old Georgetown Road is about to close permanently. As far as I know there aren't any other grocery stores in that immediate area around the new Wegmans so I was right you were wrong. It's ok. It happens.
You are again wrong, or don't get off the couch to often. The Fresh Market directly across the street from Wegmans is still going strong. Learning?
The Harris Teeter on Old Georgetown Rd in North Bethesda is way too big and there is rarely anyone in there, as you say. They made a big mistake making it so large and covid and post covid will bring an end to it.
One of the biggest mistakes Harris Teeter has ever made I think.
Yes, I goofed saying the NEW Wegmans is in North Bethesda. It is actually in Rockville. In any case, it opens THIS MORNING at 9AM and I am going to the Grand Opening……….YEAH !!!
10:26 - again wrong? Don't get off the couch much? You mentioned The fresh market store in Congressional plaza which is a very nice store but is very rarely ever crowded number one. Number two it's not comparable at all to the full size grocery stores like Safeway which closed like Harris Teeter which is on its way out and will be closed soon and certainly not comparable to Wegmans so I don't know what you're talking about when you say learning. I know exactly what I'm talking about and what I'm stating is a fact. You may not like it and that's okay, but I can't help that.
