A woman's shoe somehow became lodged in the Up escalator by Sears at Westfield Montgomery Mall yesterday. The shoe-snatching escalator was temporarily shut down as a result. A good reminder to always "watch your step." With apologies to this escalator, I'm afraid Metro has the inoperable-escalator market cornered in Montgomery County.

Actually, Westfield Montgomery has the same number of escalators out of service as all of WMATA’s Montgomery County stations combined: one! On a proportional basis I award the advantage to Metro.

Payless was another Westfield store that Bethesda Magazine falsely reported as closing last year.
@8:48: What other stores did the Magazine falsely report as closing? And before you say, "Sears!!" -- let's be clear: the Magazine never reported that Sears was closing. They reported that Sears notified the state of their intention to close the store, which was an event that happened; but they made no claims about the store closing. Just thought I'd help by explaining this since many readers here seem to struggle with the distinction.
Gee, I hope no one was hurt when their shoe got stuck! Looks to be their last step off the escalator, too.

@9:54 Many years ago, a woman died at the Bethesda Metro escalator. She tripped down the stairs and was wearing a scarf that got caught in the combplate; it strangled her before people could come to her aid. It was more than 20 years ago and I couldn't find a link online. Anyone else remember it?
10:58 AM - Funny you should mention that. I thought I remembered something at the Bethesda station from back when I worked in the Triangle. And couldn't find anything online either.
I did see someone almost faceplant the pavement when her shoe got caught at Gallery Place/Chinatown.
Unless there was more than one such incident, that one involved a 3-year-old girl whose jacket was caught, in the Minnesota Avenue station in January 1985.
There was a similar incident in Montreal in 2014.

How could the shoe have gotten jammed in the comb plate, when the steps are moving AWAY from the comb plate?
And also, why is the shoe pointing in the opposite direction of the movement of the steps?

You report on this escalator at Westfield, yet there was no mention of the out of order up escalator next to the bowling alley. This went shutdown for over three months. It finally reopened this week. Talk about sorry management.
