Dan Cox, a Republican candidate for Maryland Governor, has proposed placing a limit on property taxes in the state. The proposal would prevent the assessed property value calculated by the state from increasing above the price the current homeowner paid for the house at the time of purchase. Cox's running mate, Rob Krop, announced the platform plank on social media yesterday. "We need to stop taxing families out of their homes," Krop said.

This is a recipe for disaster and you just need to look to CA (they didn't freeze it at purchase price, but increases are only allowed at like 1.5% per year) and what it did to the housing market. Creates a ton of people really angry at elderly homeowners living in their now $3MM+ homes that they purchased for $100,000 50 years ago paying next to nothing in property tax and freezing the buying/sale of homes.
Why not just slash property tax rates, so everyone benefits? Why preference one class of owner over another class?
The problem is the D supermajority in Annapolis so the most any conservative can hope for is a reduction in the increase. Liberals vote for free stuff and promises of chocolate rivers when the reality is something completely different. Ask Mandami about that. On the plus side, at least Cox would cooperate with the enforcement of existing laws which Moore & the MC Council are at odds with the majority of elected sheriff's in this state.
