A demolition permit has been requested from Montgomery County for the former Jewelry Exchange building at 7747 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. The building is one of several adjacent properties that will be demolished in the near future to make way for - what else! - a new apartment tower. After twenty years and two million TV commercials, "THE JEWELRY EXCHANGE BETHESDA!!!" closed in the spring of 2022. Those "thousands of GIA diamonds" were cleared out long ago, and we'll see how soon the other properties move to the demolition phase.

Any news on a demo permit for the Old Georgetown Grill building? Not much sense to tear down just the jewelry building. The grill will be missed, but a cool mixed-use tower on that corner would make a nice landmark entrance to downtown from the south, southwest and west. Perhaps a New Old Georgetown Grill in the base would be possible.
That would be a great name for it.
How about calling the new building The Occultor, since it will help to further cast the area in perpetual shadow.
10:42 - Actually all those low-rise buildings on that block will be replaced by a single high-rise building. Old Georgetown Grill has already announced that their owners will retire soon. The demolition of this building is probably intended to speed up the process. I wish they would do the same with the buildings at Wisconsin and Cordell and Norfolk and DelRay.
Two one-story high buildings on the north end of this project are remaining. One is the House of Milae, a Korean Restaurant, and another one to the north. So a bit of low rise Woodmont Triangle will remain between this new tower and The Sophia.
