Wag N' Wash replaces Loyal Companion in Bethesda
All is not lost for pet owners who were relying on Loyal Companion, the pet store that recently closed at 6900 Arlington Road in Bethesda. Wag N' Wash has moved into their space at the end of the Bradley Shopping Center. Wag N' Wash carries food and supplies for dogs and cats, offers grooming services as well as a self-serve pet washing station, and features a "gourmet" pet deli and bakery.
Wag N' Wash was founded in 1999 by Jef Strauss and Dan Remus. Each location is independently owned and operated by local businesspeople. Wag N' Wash was acquired last year by Pet Supplies Plus, but Strauss and Remus are staying on-board until spring next year, to ensure a smooth transition and that the brand maintains the standards they've set for more than two decades.
"Both Pet Supplies Plus and Wag N' Wash believe in community, local retail and a fun experience in our stores," Strauss said in a statement. "With strong infrastructure behind them, passionate owners can build local relationships and deliver the ultimate experiential retail experience." Wag N' Wash currently also has two other stores in Maryland, which are located in Rockville and California (in St. Mary's County).

Edith's Pizza is coming to Bethesda
Here's a breaking news story I've been trying to crack since April. Now I can report that Edith's Pizza will be the new tenant at 6910 Arlington Road, in the Bradley Shopping Center in downtown Bethesda. The pizzeria will also include a bakery that will sell cakes and pastries. It will fill the spot vacated by PureRyde a year ago.

Strosniders Hardware to return to full business hours tomorrow in Bethesda
Strosniders Hardware at 6930 Arlington Road in the Bradley Shopping Center will expand back to its normal business hours tomorrow, January 30, 2021. Those hours are Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Saturdays 7:30 AM - 7:00 PM, and Sundays 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
The store was forced to briefly close earlier this month after a coronavirus outbreak among employees. When the store had been sanitized, and all other employees tested and cleared for the virus, Strosniders reopened with limited hours, and has been gradually expanding towards the resumption of full hours.

Strosniders closes temporarily after employees test positive for coronavirus
It's not often you see no activity at Strosniders Hardware in Bethesda during the popular store's operating hours. But the store was indeed closed Monday evening. A sign on the door says multiple employees at the store have tested positive for Covid-19. According to the sign, the Bethesda location will remain closed until all employees can be tested, and the store sanitized.
Strosniders' Kensington and Potomac stores remain open for business. This is one of the rare times since the pandemic began that a private business in Montgomery County has publicly acknowledged an outbreak.
Montgomery County has not conducted any significant contact tracing, and outside of honest businesses like Strosniders who look out for the safety of their customers, there have been few public announcements to alert shoppers or diners that they have been exposed. The only public announcements made by the County government have been when employees at their own monopoly liquor stores have tested positive, raising the question of why the same information has not been traced and announced for private businesses.

Walgreens opens in Bethesda
The first Walgreens in Bethesda opened yesterday at the Bradley Shopping Center in downtown Bethesda. Interestingly, the timing was coordinated with the closure of the Walgreens-owned Rite Aid at the Westwood Shopping Center Friday evening. Rite Aid pharmacy customers are apparently assumed to now take their prescriptions to this Walgreens, where the pharmacy counter is the main focus of the small space.
Last Thursday I noticed the shelves had been stocked. An Apple Store-style security barrier was also installed inside the front entrance. It not only prevents smash and grab burglars from gaining access to the store, but also blurs out all detail on product packaging that can be seen through the front windows.
Now that the store is opened, we can finally see what products will be stocked in the tiny store, which is a new neighborhood store format Walgreens is rolling out nationwide this year. Surprisingly, they do carry some food, raising hopes that this store might stock new Walgreens-exclusive Pringles flavors in the future.
Besides snacks, there is a decent inventory of over the counter medications, toiletries, medical supplies, etc. You're likely to find whatever basic drug store items you need here, without having to play Frogger to cross the street to CVS. However, the store shares the rural town hours of the other businesses in the Bradley Shopping Center, where things wind down by 8:00 PM most nights, so don't cut up your CVS bonus card just yet.

Bethesda Walgreens may be the smallest drug store ever (Photos)
The window coverings have been removed at the future Walgreens store at the Bradley Shopping Center in downtown Bethesda. It is certainly not going to be a full-size Walgreens, to state the obvious. But it's pretty shocking just how tiny the store is, when arch-rival CVS right across the street has many times the floor space. There's certainly plenty of demand for a full-size Walgreens in Bethesda, but this looks more like the chain's new pharmacy-focused "small store" concept. Bring back drug stores with lunch counters and soda fountains, I say!

Walgreens opening Bethesda store
Huge retail news from the Bradley Shopping Center in downtown Bethesda this morning. Walgreens will open a store at the center, the first Walgreens location in Bethesda history. The permanent sign was installed - and lit - Sunday. This is great news, as the chain often offers merchandise exclusive to its stores, and has a great Halloween section this time of year. The addition means even more one-stop shopping for Bethesdans, at what is already one of the top one-stop shopping centers in Montgomery County.
Walgreens should have had a Bethesda location by now with its acquisition of the Rite Aid on Westbard Avenue, but appears to have held off on its promised transformation. That Rite Aid is likely to be demolished as early as next year, and will not return to the new Westbard development there, as the new Westwood Giant store will include an in-store pharmacy.

Loyal Companion pet store to open in downtown Bethesda
The Bradley Shopping Center has finally found a tenant for the vacant old pharmacy space at 6900 Arlington Road in Bethesda. Loyal Companion is a national chain pet store that promises to provide all essential pet needs under one store roof, from pet food to grooming and vet services. The company says it has brought together several top brand names, including Kriser's, Especially For Pets, Bark! Dogma – Life, With Your Pet, Pet Source, Pet Life and Whole Pet Central.
Loyal Companion is making a nationwide grand opening event push this coming week. This Bethesda location, however, is so new it is not yet even listed on the website to participate. Stay tuned for an opening date. They're very smart to lease here, because the shopping center is always packed, and people go up and down the row of storefronts for one-stop shopping. I'm surprised this spot stayed vacant for so long, given that reason.
