The Heights food hall closes in struggling Friendship Heights

The Heights
, a much-touted food hall at The Shops at Wisconsin Place in Friendship Heights, has closed. The closure is the latest cannonball-to-the-gut for the once-fancy area, which has declined as the wealthiest residents of Montgomery County have fled to lower-tax jurisdictions in the area. Somebody has lost an incredible amount of money - or is getting a big tax write-off - as the construction for this food hall was long and expensive, and the opening was extensively promoted with advertising and media/influencer coverage. The food hall was targeted toward an upscale audience that, frankly, isn't there in the numbers it once was in this part of Chevy Chase.

The demise of The Heights is also another body blow to the Montgomery County Council, which is largely responsible for the policies and high taxes that have sent the ultra-rich packing. Prior to the debut of The Heights, Councilmember Andrew Friedson, who represents the area, had made the humorous claim to a credulous Washington Post reporter that Friendship Heights' big problem was a lack of "nice local places to grab a cup of coffee, to have a nice meal, to pick up some groceries and enjoy an evening out." That was farcical on its face at the time, as Friendship Heights has an abundance of all of those. But the collapse of The Heights - which included a full-service, sit-down restaurant, a speakeasy, and multiple stall tenant eateries - indubitably pounds the final heavy nail into the Friedson Theory coffin. Now running for County Executive, Friedson might find himself reminded of how wrong he was by opponents in next year's Democratic primary.

Having taken up over 10,000-square-feet of space at The Shops, Friendship Heights will now be left with yet another vacant storefront. That's been a familiar sight in the neighborhood, as the Wisconsin Avenue strip once described as "Montgomery County's Rodeo Drive" has in recent times become a corridor of empty storefronts and smashed-out bus shelters. The Collection at Chevy Chase underwent a major renovation, and the once-elite Mazza Gallerie mall was demolished. Out went Jimmy Choo and Louis Vuitton, and in came discount grocer Amazon Fresh and Potbelly Sandwich Works.

The curtain falling on The Heights is merely the latest humiliation for our utterly-incompetent and corrupt County Council. They had received a stiff warning from their own professional staff about the massive amount of County revenue lost through the exit of just 25 high roller residents, but completely ignored it. The Council raised taxes massively on residents and businesses alike, giving Montgomery County the highest tax and fee burden in the region, and causing record numbers of business closures. At The Heights, the chickens came home to roost, went back out, and have come home to roost yet again. Daaaaaaaaamn. Heckuva job, Brownie!

Cheesy Pizzi closes in Bethesda

Why are the pizzerias closing in downtown Bethesda? Anthony's, The Corner Slice, and now, Cheesy Pizzi. Yes, Cheesy Pizzi at 8021 Wisconsin Avenue has closed. Previously known as Pizza Tempo, the pizza parlor was already on the market for sale in March of 2024. Apparently there were no buyers, and the business has closed. Business owners continue to be simultaneously-squeezed by the moribund Montgomery County economy, and the anti-business policies of the County Council, particularly in the thin profit margin hospitality industry.

Victor Gallery closes in Bethesda

Victor Gallery
has closed at 7034 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda.  The fine rug showroom opened here in 2023. As you can see, the interior has been totally cleared out. Founded by Victor Mashihi, Victor Gallery is a family rug enterprise that began in Egypt in 1916. Here, it may have been the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy, and the County Council's anti-business policies.

Neuhaus Chocolates temporarily closed at Bethesda Row

Neuhaus Chocolates
at 7123 Bethesda Lane at Bethesda Row is temporarily closed. The shop is expected to reopen this Saturday, August 23, 2025. "Repairs" are the reason cited for the closure on a sign posted inside the front door. If you are in need of chocolates before Saturday, try Velatis, Bethesda Chocolates, or Henry's Sweet Retreat in downtown Bethesda.

Menu screens removed at closed Donutchew at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

A quick update on the closure of Donutchew at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda: The mochi donut shop at the edge of the Dining Terrace food court remained closed Saturday. Another sign that the closure appears permanent is the removal of the menu screens from the stall, which were gone as of last evening. Who will fill the donut vacuum at Montgomery Mall?

Donutchew closed at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Donutchew
was closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall during business hours last night. Their stall at the end of the Dining Terrace food court appeared to have been cleared out. The mochi donut shop has relocated in the mall once before, from a kiosk to this spot, but no signage or message was posted with any information for customers Thursday evening. Donutchew first opened at Montgomery Mall in November 2023.

Fashion Q closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Fashion Q
has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Their space has been totally cleared out inside. The Los Angeles-based fashion wholesaler lasted less than a year at the mall after its November 2024 opening, despite its trademark super low prices. Fashion Q is the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy.

IT'SUGAR closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

IT'SUGAR
has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The candy store's windows have been covered, and signage has been removed from above the entrance. Montgomery County's moribund economy and the County Council's anti-business policies, have turned the shop's sweet profit margin sour. Heckuva job, Brownie!

In contrast to the closure here, IT'SUGAR is currently in a major expansion mode elsewhere, opening "15 to 20 stores a year," according to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce article touting the chain's success. Openings so far in 2025 include Poughkeepsie and Middletown in New York; Salem, New Hampshire; Mercedes, Texas; and Braintree, Massachusetts. Something for the County Council to ponder: what are we doing wrong, that Braintree is doing right?

Ladurée closes at Bethesda Row

Mon Dieu! Here's a shocker: Ladurée has suddenly closed at 4808 Bethesda Avenue at Bethesda Row. Signage has been removed from above the storefront. The French cafe appears to be the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy, and the flight of the rich to lower-tax jurisdictions in the area, as I can find no news reports of the Paris-based chain engaging in any mass closure of its locations elsewhere. Ladurée opened here in 2022.

Miniso closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda (Photos)

Miniso
has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. It turns out that even popular concepts from rapidly-growing companies are not immune to the moribund Montgomery County economy. Miniso's revenue grew 9.1% in mainland China, and 30.3% overseas during the first quarter of this year, the Chinese company announced in May. Employees are boxing up the contents of the store. The anti-business Montgomery County Council never met a slim profit margin it couldn't shrink even further. Heckuva job, Brownie!

GAP closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

GAP
has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Strange things have been afoot at the store in recent weeks, namely the store frequently - if not nightly - closing early, and posting a sign stating that it was due to the air-conditioning being out. The floor inventory had also been dwindling. Now the reason for all this is clear, as the clothing chain announced in an email to customers yesterday that "Gap Montgomery Mall has closed." Customers are being directed to the GAP at 11820 Grand Park Avenue at Pike & Rose in Rockville. The Montgomery Mall GAP is the latest victim of the moribund Montgomery County economy, as its parent company's downsizing plan of closing 350 GAP and Banana Republic stores shuttered those locations between 2023 and early 2024, and the Montgomery Mall store was spared the axe in that culling.

Guru Groceries temporarily closed in Bethesda

Guru Groceries & Chaat House Indian Market
is taking a brief summer break at 7817 Old Georgetown Road in downtown Bethesda. The store will reopen on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Guru did not post a reason for the closure. However, quite a few small businesses in Bethesda temporarily close in the summer, when their ownership takes a vacation or travels on business.

Marshalls cleared out in Friendship Heights (Photos)

Marshalls
closed several months ago at 5333 Wisconsin Avenue NW in the Friendship Heights area of Chevy Chase. At the time, Marshalls described it as a temporary closure. However, the corporate website now says, "This store is permanently closed." That is not a total surprise, as a redevelopment of the property is pending. The store has now been cleared out inside.

&Pizza reopens in Bethesda

UPDATE - June 28, 2025, 7:40 PM: &pizza has reopened.

UPDATE - June 27, 2025, 9:33 PM: &pizza says, "there’s a water leak that’s being repaired. We will be back open any day now." There is no sign or message referring to this posted at the restaurant, however.

&Pizza has closed "for now" at 7614 Old Georgetown Road in The Metropolitan in Bethesda. The "for now" caveat was added by the local chain in a message to customers without explanation. One could be that a number of &pizza locations have been sold to at least one franchisee, as the company attempts to move from direct ownership to a franchise model. They may want to give that franchisee, or another, the option to reopen this store before dismantling it. &pizza opened here over 11 years ago, in May of 2014. That's a good run in Bethesda by any measure.

Crystal Energy closes in Bethesda

Crystal Energy
has closed at 7030 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda. A sign in the window is advertising the space as available for lease. The "Psychic of Chevy Chase" had a solid five year run at this storefront, especially when you consider it opened just as the pandemic was slamming the area in the spring of 2020. These psychics tend to pop up again in new locations around the downtown, so this may not be the end for Crystal Energy. Only Kenny Kingston knows for sure!

Wang Dynasty closes in Bethesda

Wang Dynasty
has closed at 4929 Bethesda Avenue. The Chinese restaurant's last night was Saturday. It opened here in May of 2019, replacing Shanghai Village. Exiting at the end of May suggests the lease was up, but six years - and surviving the pandemic - was a strong run for a restaurant in downtown Bethesda.
