City Perch will reopen its dining room at Pike & Rose on Friday, June 19, 2020. They've had curbside takeout and patio service so far. Now diners who wish will be able to dine in the air-conditioned dining room once again.

Diners will be seated at least 6 feet apart, and dining room capacity cannot exceed 50% under Montgomery County Phase 2 reopening rules that begin at 5:00 PM Friday. Temperatures will be checked at the door, and employees will wear masks and gloves. You can use their online menu on your device, or request a single-use physical copy of the menu.

City Perch adds ground floor patio dining at Pike & Rose

I first noticed tables set up on the sidewalk outside the entrance to the iPic Theaters when I visited Pike & Rose on August 18. It turns out that City Perch Kitchen + Bar, located upstairs in the theater, has now added outdoor dining. The new ground floor patio seating on Grand Park Avenue is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also available are new al fresco menu items, as well as an al fresco bar list. The new items take advantage of ingredients from the Up Top Acres rooftop farm, that is literally above the restaurant at the Federal Realty development.

Featured items include a Shrimp Cocktail with green goddess dressing and lemongrass cocktail sauce; Crab Cakes with Old Bay remoulade, frisée and citrus salad, yuzu vinaigrette; a Summer Heirloom Tomato Salad with roasted peaches, burrata, smoked sea salt, passionfruit vinaigrette, aged balsamic, toasted pistachio and basil; a 1924 Caesar Salad with romaine hearts, garlic croutons, Parmigiano-Reggiano and chives; Steak Frites made with a dry-aged striploin, "shoooo-string" fries and béarnaise sauce; and personal 10-inch Margherita, Smoky BBQ and Meatza pizzas.

The new outdoor patio can also be reserved for private events. To make reservations or schedule a private event, visit the City Perch website.

City Perch teams up with rooftop farm at Pike & Rose

City Perch Kitchen + Bar at Pike & Rose announced Tuesday that it has partnered with Up Top Acres, the rooftop farm at the Federal Realty development. Up Top Acres, the Mid-Atlantic's largest rooftop farm at 17000 SF, will supply the upscale restaurant with fresh produce grown just above the restaurant between the iPic Theatres and the Pallas luxury apartment building.

Previously, the output of the farm has primarily been going to those signed up in the Farm Membership Program, which is currently sold-out. Now City Perch will be acquiring salad greens, heirloom tomato varieties, cucumbers, scallions, peppers and eggplant, as well as herbs like cilantro and basil, into its summer menu. New to the menu is a “Chef’s Rooftop Salad” that will change based on produce available from the farm each week.

“As a seasonal American dining room, we source locally from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.  I have been a fan of Up Top Acres since they started in DC in 2014 and had 'produce envy' of my DC Chef friends! This is a Chef’s dream come true!  We are excited to incorporate Up Top Acres into our menus,” Chef Sherry Yard, Chief Operating Officer at iPic® Entertainment said Tuesday.  "I am truly grateful to Federal Realty and Up Top Acres for bringing sustainable produce to Pike & Rose that allows us to provide our guests with local ingredients at peak freshness and flavor.”

New brunch menu at City Perch - here's my review (Video+photos)

City Perch at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda has a new brunch menu, and I stopped by this past weekend to try it out. New menu items include French toast; Eggs Benedict; Arugula+Endive salad with grilled shrimp, candy-striped and yellow beets, poached pears, goat cheese, candied walnuts and a maple balsamic vinaigrette dressing; The Roma sandwich with mozzarella cheese, tomato, pesto, and arugula on toasted sourdough; a crispy chicken waffle sandwich; crispy latke fries with applesauce and sour cream; Monkey Bread Babka; and smoked salmon-stuffed popovers.

Central to the new brunch is the Brunch Box concept, which pairs any entree with a cocktail or non-alcoholic beverage for $19.99. You can upgrade to bottomless beverages for a $10 fee. Other high-end upgrades include truffles and caviar.
While they have a great Bloody Mary here, I chose a mimosa because most of the food I was ordering wouldn't pair well with tomato juice.
There was a strong flavor of freshly-squeezed juice in this classic brunch cocktail.
City Perch has been recognized by even the notoriously Montgomery County-averse food critic Tom Sietsema for its bread basket. Now you can order a special brunch version, which when I visited included a chocolate croissant, a lemon poppyseed muffin, and a walnut croissant, all new. Also in the basket were two favorites from the dinner version, the honey-dipped cornbread and orange-sage biscuit. Spreads included were Trickling Springs butter and strawberry jam.

City Perch plans to have a different kind of muffin in the bread basket each week. The lemon poppyseed muffin lived up to its name with a lemon zing to balance the sweet and very moist cake. Surprisingly, I found I liked the walnut-stuffed croissant as much as its dark chocolate-stuffed twin. Both are even better with butter added. If you remember my City Perch dinner review, you'll recall I highly rated the cornbread and orange-sage biscuit. Together, the brunch bread basket rates five stars.

Nutella syrup
Another new bread item is the Monkey Bread Babka. Stuffed with even more dark chocolate than the croissant, it is a cross between a frostingless Cinnabon cinnamon roll and a popover. Inside the layers are coffee and cinnamon, and there is a small pitcher of Nutella syrup. I would give this four stars. However, while I ordered this to test out for purposes of this review, normally this would be too much bread following the bread basket.

In that case, I would advise going with the bread basket, unless you are a Nutella fanatic. For $5 more, you get a variety of breads and still get chocolate in the croissant. Either bread order is more than enough for two people.
Now, on to the main course - French toast. This isn't a diner recipe, that's for sure. At City Perch you get two thick slices of brioche with ricotta cheese, bananas, candied pecans, powdered sugar, and with a lemon-and-orange cornflake-encrusted bread crust for extra crunch. But don't stop there. At upscale Pike & Rose you can upgrade your French toast to "decadent" for $4, which adds farmers market berries on top, and mascarpone cheese between the slices of brioche.

I also added a side of two scrambled eggs to a meal desperately in need of protein. The eggs were perfect, and I didn't need to add any salt or pepper.

The result is an off-the-charts-rich French toast, the soft bread and fillings contrasting with the crunch of still-crisp corn flakes and berry seeds. Unless you are a traditionalist, this may be the ultimate French toast in town. Perhaps not surprisingly for a restaurant known for its bread, this new French toast earns five stars.

All of the items and upgrades I ordered added up to $43.45. Assuming you get only one bread side, you could knock $4 (Monkey Bread Babka) or $9 (brunch bread basket) off of that price. And, of course, with no bread, you could get the French toast and mimosa for $19.99, and the eggs for an additional $4. Not bad for this price-point of restaurant.

Brunch at City Perch is an excellent and convenient choice when you are catching a Saturday or Sunday matinee at the iPic Theaters the restaurant is part of.

City Perch review - Pike & Rose in North Bethesda

Much of the buzz around City Perch, the aptly-named restaurant that sits over Pike & Rose's busiest street, has been generated by its epic bread board, decadent desserts and creative, handcrafted cocktails with high-end ingredients. A recent visit finds that all to be true, but with main courses holding their own against the carbohydrates and booze.

WATCH video review: City Perch at Pike & Rose

After you ascend the escalator up to the iPic Theaters, of which City Perch is a part, you'll first be struck by three things - the peaceful, lounge-like space between the host stand and the bar, the wraparound bar itself, and the view from the outdoor "infinity terrace" and windows. That view will get even better once the skeletal frames of buildings rising nearby become part of the finished urban streetscape below the restaurant.

The basic culinary theme is classic American dishes, but many have a twist that either adds a hint of another cuisine. Popovers get a dash of cayenne pepper, and classic dinner rolls get a Chinese spin.

You'll want to start with something to drink, and in this case, it was a Flying Dog Numero Uno from Frederick, Maryland. Highly carbonated, easy to drink and citrus-enhanced, it will hit the spot while temperatures remain in the 90s. I give this beer 5 stars in its category.
But let's get to the main event - the bread board. My favorite was the Chinese Butter Buns. Imagine an upscale version of the best dinner roll you ever had - and then imagine adding whipped Trickling Springs butter to it.

With a crispy snap to the exterior and moist citrus cake inside, the orange sage biscuit gets the most complex spread on the board, maple bourbon pecan butter.
You can see how moist the honey-dipped corn bread is before you even take into account the goat cheese on top.
Finally, there is the aforementioned Cayenne Parmesan Popover, where the pepper provides more flavor than heat. This is great example of how what could have been a five-star flaky, buttery popover is enhanced with an unexpected flavor. The bread board, and each item on it, receive five stars from me. In an age when a chunk of hard, crusty bread that might land you in the dentist's chair the next day is the norm, the City Perch bread selection is the best in the County - outstanding.
So notoriously Bethesda-averse Tom Sietsema agrees with me on that point. But how did he miss the Brioche-Crusted Maryland Blue Crab Cakes? Once again bread takes center stage with the rich brioche exterior. While it doesn't emphasize jumbo lumps of crab, there is plenty of crab in there, and contrary to the Washingtonian review, the meat is flavorful. Standard seafood restaurant enhancements get an upscale boost here, as well. Tartar sauce is replaced with an Old Bay remoulade that you won't leave a trace of on the plate, and coleslaw cedes the plate to frisèe-citrus salad with yuzu vinaigrette. Hey, we are at Pike & Rose, right? This is one appetizer you won't have to share, and with melt in your mouth crab cakes like this, you won't want to. Five stars.
One dish you will want to share is the French classic pommes aligot. Much like the butter buns, think of the richest mashed potatoes you've had, and then add melted white cheddar, gouda and mozzarella cheeses. This five star side dish will serve two or more.
An unexpected bit of peppery spice elevated the more-than-solid Mac & Cheese to four stars.
Vegetarians and meat lovers alike will want to order the Crispy Brussels Sprouts. Sprouts that are cooked just right get a hearty, downright meaty flavor from miso, shaved pecorino cheese, crushed peanuts, and orchard-fresh caramelized apples. They're topped off with togarashi, and I'm delighted to report that this is the second time in a month I've encountered that Japanese spice on a Montgomery County menu - it's officially a trend.
The grilled shrimp is just what it sounds like. Plenty of smoke flavor, and the shrimp are huge. With the simple kale and tomato garnish underneath, those not eating light will want to add a side dish to this nice 3 star entree.
Another view so you can
see how thick that shrimp is
My personal choice was the Braised Beef Short Ribs. Again, the chef starts off with a well-executed meat centerpiece that you can slice with your fork. You'd go home thinking that was a satisfying four-star chunk of beef that delivered exactly what you order short ribs for. But switching out the ubiquitous red skin mashed potatoes and undercooked green beans that often join short ribs at many restaurants earned this an overall five star rating. Instead, you get rich and tender creamed spinach, and a massive, crispy and fluffy potato pancake. Absolutely delicious.
It's hard to pick just one dessert from this menu. But considering how rare it is to find Baked Alaska on menus around here, I had to order it. The torched, towering meringue swirl on top tastes a lot like a toasted marshmallow. Cutting against that very sugary exterior is the lemon gelato inside, which has a real bite to it. Blueberries fit in between the two on the sweetness spectrum, and there are many of them in there. All of this is on top of a triple-gingerbread crumble. I give this five stars.
If nothing else, you'll want to stop by for a bread board before a movie at iPic, or ask the bartender what's new on the cocktail list. But staying for dinner is an excellent choice also, with a menu that will please picky or unadventurous diners as much as those looking for a roasted Long Island duck, or an unexpected twist on an American classic.
