Pi Pizzeria to close in Bethesda

These are sad times to be a deep dish pizza fan in Bethesda. First UNO Pizzeria & Grill closed in the Apex Building. Then we traded Chicago for St. Louis with deep dish pizzas from Pi Pizzeria in April 2016. Now Pi Pizzeria has posted a sign that this Friday, February 2, 2018, will be their last day in Bethesda.

They had a great product, and a good location if you knew there was ample public parking hidden behind the building. Pi Pizzeria, which gained fame as a favorite of President Barack Obama's, has one remaining area location, at 910 F Street N.W. in the District.

Suma Restaurant + Bar opening in Bethesda (Photos+menu), Pi Pizzeria opening 4 PM today

Suma Restaurant + Bar is the new concept at the former Nest Cafe space at 4921 Bethesda Avenue. They've been having a soft opening over the last few days, and the official opening is scheduled for tomorrow, April 19. Ignore the Nest signs that are still on the facade at the moment.

The outdoor deck was crowded despite the quiet launch. In terms of expectations and hours today, keep in mind it is a soft opening, but the menu and makeover look great.

There is an emphasis on farm-sourced ingredients, and a mixture of popular appetizers like oysters, deviled eggs and wings combined with sophisticated ones like Chicken Liver Parfait and pan-seared foie gras.

Entrees are much the same, with whole bronzini and steak frites sharing space with duck confit sausage pizza with smoked gruyere, scallions, caramelized onions and hoisin sauce. Pricing isn't too bad when you consider you are getting side dishes you might have to put out $8 for on other restaurant menus. See below for the menu and wine list (click to enlarge).

Meanwhile, Barack Obama's favorite pizza comes to Bethesda today. Pi Pizzeria will open at 7137 Wisconsin Avenue. There's parking in the rear. They offer a St. Louis-style deep dish, as well as a thin cornmeal crust pizza. Their liquor license application will be heard by Montgomery County on April 14.

Pi Pizzeria has posted Coming Soon signage, including a few boasts of the famous endorsements it has received from Esquire magazine and the Commander-in-Chief himself. Barack Obama is a fan of their deep dish pizza, and as a Chicagoan, that's not too surprising.

But they will also be serving a cornmeal thin crust pizza. Both types were served at the White House in 2009, a year after Obama first sampled the pizza while on the campaign trail in St. Louis.

In order to serve "the best beer menu" in America, they're going to need a liquor license, and that application is due for review by Montgomery County on April 14.

Barack Obama's favorite pizza is now coming to Bethesda. Pi Pizzeria will bring its St. Louis recipe pies to 7137 Wisconsin Avenue in April. They are now hiring for this location, which has been a pizza place before. It was most recently Pitzze.

Order the deep dish, of course! They also offer a thin, cornmeal crust. You may also know Pi Pizzeria as District of Pi in DC.
