Local favorite Spring Mill Bread Co. has closed at 4961 Elm Street in Bethesda. The bakery has been open for 25 years, Their lease has ended, and they decided to close, according to the owners. Spring Mill's Rockville and Takoma Park locations remain open, and they say some of the Bethesda employees will transfer to those bakeries.

Stale bread from five weeks ago. Not even for the birds.
What's all the sadness about? It really wasn't all that great. Fresh Baguette is maybe a few million times better.
Any word on Wells Fargo?
With Spring Mill Bread Co. gone and La Madeleine probably next, does anyone have recommendations of bread bakeries in or near downtown Bethesda?
You kidding? Fresh Baguette.
Fresh Baguette
Yeah, Fresh Baguette. Slice a baguette into quarters (lengthwise and across), then wrap, then freeze. Anyone who objects to that is simply ignorant. Also, when Bethesda Bagels returns, you can buy bagels by the dozen.
Why no update on FreshBikes? It has been closed for days/weeks and now there is a failure to pay rent notice on the doors. AND some new locks on the doors.
Fresh Baguette is great, as is Red Bandana Bakery. I just bought a few of their cupcakes for Valentine's Day, they were AMAZING. The red velvet I could take or leave, but the vanilla and chocolate were each excellent. And the frosting - holy crap. So good.
Spring Mill Bread had been in the neighborhood for twenty years. They had a following and paid their rent. On that same block is the empty pet store that has been empty for , at least, two years and two closed restaurants. I am not a mathematical genius but a pet store closed for two years pays less than a bakery that pays rent but not as much rent as the landlord wants.
Amazing got long a crappy basket lasted ifI'd real the story here.
