Rock Bottom signage removed in Bethesda (Photos)

Signage was removed from the facade of Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery at 7900 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda yesterday. Still in place is the giant tank outside with its own signage inviting passersby to "enjoy a taste of handcrafted refreshingly crisp ice cold goodness." Such a landmark would not have been permitted by Montgomery County elected officials, nor by the developers who fund their campaigns, today. Every inch must be dedicated to luxury apartments!

With the closure of Rock Bottom, I believe we have now hit the magic number of 25: twenty-five nightspots have been lost in downtown Bethesda since the County Council's disastrous "Nighttime Economy" initiative of 2012. That's not including the many restaurants that have closed - just bars and nightclubs. Heckuva job, Brownie!

That's fine. Their neon had a few missing letters for maybe years. That could have been an early indicator of their demise you never know.

How is On St Elmo’s and Bt Bethesda doing?

Let’s be honest. The place was deteriorating and outdated. Honestly kind of grimy. It needed a remodel if it wanted to bring in customers. The place looked like it hadn’t been updated at all in the 30+ years it was open. Like a giant 1990s Applebees on the inside.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it seems a harbinger of not-so-good future nighttime growth/activity. Two inflection points in our downward spiral will be the arrival of Nike, and the closing of Rock Bottom. The coup de gras
