DON'T LEAN BACK ON THE "CRIME SCENE" BENCH IN DOWNTOWN BETHESDA (PHOTOS)

I don't know what, if anything, happened on this bench on Old Georgetown Road. But don't lean back, because there is no back.  It has temporarily been named, "The Crime Scene Bench," for its police tape wrap.

This is just one of many thefts of these bench-back works of art...at least the fifth theft. I refer you to http://ww2.gazette.net/stories/02252009/bethnew191748_32486.shtml

According to this Gazette article, "It costs $2,500 to replace these. The artist who created the benches, Takoma Park's Bodil Meleney...says each bench is made out of Spanish cedar, which she has to special order. She brushes 15 separate layers of coating onto the wood to ensure the design doesn't fade, crack or run. Completing the coatings alone can take up to three and a half weeks, she said. "

Very sad.

Thanks for solving the mystery. I guess it technically was a crime scene, then, with the theft of the artwork.
