Sidewalk reopens in front of The Charles in Bethesda ahead of January opening

The Wisconsin Avenue sidewalk has reopened in front of The Charles, the new apartment tower nearing completion at 7342 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda. It had been closed for about two years. The building is now leasing. First residents of The Charles are expected to move in on January 19, 2026, if all goes according to schedule.

About time!

Sidewalk reopening, not important. Travel lane on Montgomery & Wisconsin Ave, important. Thank goodness for that.

The question is when are we getting that block of Wisconsin Ave back to 3 lanes with proper cross walks? The purple line construction is never going to end is it?

2:25 - Next to never probably. The county cabal is anti-car if you haven't noticed already.

Sadly the lane will remain closed (except to right turning traffic) until they take down the purple line shed this time next year. Part of the state’s genius plan to close that lane off all the way up at Old Georgetown

Weird that they're going to close a lane for a few blocks, but I guess that's MoCo common sense at work.

Washington Property Corporation announced today that they intend to construct a 262 foot residential tower next to the Charles in Bethesda. The developer aims to take advantage of new tax breaks the county is offering to encourage office-to-residential conversion.

They are obviously doing some heavy construction in that white metal building, which is actually for the new south entrance to the Bethesda Metro station, not the Purple Line. The PL station is already mostly finished on the plaza area, with only the elevator entrance and cantilevered glass canopy yet to be built, and some interior finishes. The two buildings will be separate entrances for the Red and Purple Lines, but connected just under the street level, for easy transfers. The Red Line entrance will look very similar to the new one built at Walter Reed. Granite, clear and translucent glass.

Even after the purple line construction finishes,.the right hand Wisconsin Ave lane will be forever clogged with Uber pickups/dropoffs and DoorDash drivers with their hazards on making delivery to the Elm. Same with the Charles and other new apartments.
