Mayflower Chinese Food has officially closed at 7925 Norfolk Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The restaurant has been cleared out over the last few days. It operated for over 23 years, an impressive run amid Montgomery County's moribund economy and the County Council's anti-business policies. Ultimately, the property was sold and an agreement on a new lease could not be reached.

Any word on whether they'll be reopening elsewhere in Bethesda?
You had me at moribund.
“Moribund economy” “open for 23 years” pick one Robert
3:31: You're clearly not an economist. There are restaurants that operate for decades in failed cities and depressed neighborhoods. Individual businesses open and close all the time. But as the federal government statistics clearly show, Montgomery County's economy is indeed moribund, and has been since the turn of the century. Your guys suck. They blew it. Bigtime. But the first step is admitting you have a problem.
He said moribund! He said the word!
There may be other examples which demonstrate that MoCo's economy is moribund, but a hole-in-the-wall Chinese food place closing after 23 years ain't it.
I would argue that it is exactly it. The owners have 23 years of experience and can see that future investment in the dumpster fire that is Montgomery County is too risky. Let's see how a new wide eyed wanna be would fare in this climate. Gonna be a standard joke coming - "How do you make a small fortune in business in Montgomery County?" Answer - "Start with a large one." Sad.
The Mayflower still operates its Rockville location.
There's also a Chinese restaurant named Mayflower, with a similar sign to the now-closed one, on Wisconsin Avenue in Tenleytown. I don't know if it's owned/operated by the same people/group.
I assume the Mayflower landlord also owns the adjacent property that Duck Duck Goose (DDG) occupied. Now that the Mayflower is closed both properties can be combined into one larger rental. That would be more appealing to a new restaurant or other commercial enterprise. The previous owner of DDG complained that the site was too small for his restaurant. I think this is why the landlord did not renew the Mayflower's lease. The owner of the Mayflower wanted to stay open but the landlord did not give them a choice.
