Nighttime resurfacing on Bradley Boulevard

A contractor was performing resurfacing work on Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda last night. The paving was taking place near the intersection with Hillandale Road, just east of the railroad trestle. This does not appear to have any connection to the upcoming WSSC water main replacement project further west on Bradley.

Resurfacing project begins on Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda

A resurfacing project has begun on Little Falls Parkway north of Dorset Avenue. Milling work has already been performed on the roadway. The work added to traffic woes this past weekend on the parkway, which has become congested at peak times since Montgomery County implemented a series of illegal road diets that were overwhelmingly opposed by the surrounding community. If you have a new car, you may want to avoid the parkway until this work is finished.

Resurfacing on St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda

Resurfacing work is underway on part of St. Elmo Avenue in downtown Bethesda. Milling has been performed between Old Georgetown Road and Norfolk Avenue. Watch for lane closures, especially at night. If you have a new car, you may want to take an alternative route at the moment.

Wisconsin Avenue resurfacing continued overnight in Bethesda

How is this still going on? Wisconsin Avenue was being resurfaced in front of the Hyatt Regency Bethesda hotel way back on August 6, 2025. But over the night into this morning, the southbound lanes of Wisconsin were closed for resurfacing work. The road was heavily damaged by a water main break in the beginning of August, but why the repairs are still being done after Labor Day is inexplicable.

A Maryland State Highway Administration contractor has begun a resurfacing project on Bradley Boulevard (MD 191) in Bethesda. The work area will run from 6421 Bradley Boulevard to Bradmoor Drive, and resurface both directions of the road. Work hours will be 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday through Friday. The project is expected to be completed by mid-September, if the weather cooperates.

Resurfacing of Hampden Lane underway in Bethesda

A resurfacing project is underway on Hampden Lane in downtown Bethesda between Bethesda Row and Arlington Road. The work crew was milling the street yesterday. Watch for lane closures and flagmen. If you have a new car or are concerned about scratches, you may want to avoid Hampden Lane at the moment.

With 39 hours left to complete the Westbard Avenue realignment project and reopen the Westbard street grid by the deadline announced lat year, paving contractor M. Luis was working on the newly-designated "5600 Brookside Drive" (formerly Ridgefield Road, was supposed to be Westbard Avenue...)nwhere it meets River Road in Bethesda overnight. Rain is in the forecast today, which could potentially reduce the amount of work that can be done until it clears out Saturday evening.

With five days left to meet the September 30, 2023 11:59 PM deadline to reopen the street grid around Westbard Avenue in Bethesda, there are several new developments to report. The realigned Westbard and new stub section between the old and new Westbard Avenue toward Ridgefield Road are being surfaced. M. Luis, the company that did such a great job resurfacing River Road about six years ago, is the contractor.

The sidewalk in front of the new Phase 1 Giant building at 5400 Westbard Avenue has opened for the first time. That has afforded a first zoom-lens look into the interior of the future parking garage. The first landscaping is also being installed. Patches of grass have appeared along new sidewalks, and street trees are being planted. It will be interesting to see, once the full lighting and new streetlamps are activated around the new Giant building, if there is more or less light for pedestrians walking that stretch of Westbard after dark. The huge Westwood Shopping Center parking lot was well-lit in that area in the past.

Bethesda McDonald's parking lot resurfaced

The parking lot at McDonald's at 5214 River Road in Bethesda has been resurfaced. Men were still working with machinery in the dark behind the restaurant over the night. The work required McDonald's to close all day Monday, but it is scheduled to reopen today. While lane markings were laid down, the "DRIVE-THRU" label had not yet been painted at the entrance driveway last night.

Plaza Artist Materials repaves parking lot in Bethesda

Some readers noticed that the parking lot at Plaza Artist Materials at 7825 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda was cordoned off, and that the shipping containers there had been removed. Not to worry, it turns out it was preparation to resurface and stripe the parking lot, not a crime scene and not a business closure. Paving has been completed, and the lot has reopened to customers. 

MD 355 resurfacing project begins near Pooks Hill in Bethesda (Photos)

Maryland State Highway Administration contractors have begun a resurfacing project on Rockville Pike (MD 355) north of downtown Bethesda. The nighttime work is currently taking place in the Pooks Hill area near Pooks Hill Road and Alta Vista Road. Last night, all lanes were closed except one. This follows a similar project last year on Old Georgetown Road. So if you want to avoid dings in your car's finish, you'll want to take Old Georgetown between Bethesda and Rockville, instead of Rockville Pike, for the near future.

A resurfacing project is underway on Old Georgetown Road between the Capital Beltway and Nicholson Lane. Expect lane closures on that stretch outside of rush hours on weekdays. The project is expected to be completed by January, and will also convert one travel lane in each direction into a protected bike lane. Needless to say, if you are concerned about your car getting scratched by debris, take an alternative route during this period.

Wisconsin Avenue resurfacing blocks lanes in downtown Bethesda

A road resurfacing project is blocking some lanes tonight on Wisconsin Avenue (MD 355) between Chevy Chase Acura and the Bethesda Metro Center. Only one lane is open southbound, but there is also work in the northbound lanes.

The block of Woodmont Avenue between Norfolk Avenue and Old Georgetown Road behind the Marriott International headquarters construction site has been giving Maizon Bethesda-afflicted Arlington Road a run for its money as a third-world thoroughfare in recent years. Now that the heavy lifting is all done at the construction site, the battered, twisted and potholed block is finally getting a fresh surface of asphalt. 

Marriott's development partners say that when this new surface is complete, they will be painting a new crosswalk between the headquarters/hotel and the public parking garage across the street. Most Marriott employees will park in that public garage when the new HQ opens in 2022. In the meantime, you may want to avoid this route while this work is being done.
