Mixed-use project proposed for Steamers site in Bethesda

A mixed-use residential building is being proposed for the site currently home to the vacant Steamers restaurant at 4820 Auburn Avenue in downtown Bethesda. In contrast to the Gallery Bethesda apartment tower behind it, this building will have only 58 units. That would likely mean it will be a condominium project, rather than rental apartments.

Up to 2800 SF of retail or restaurant space will be on the ground floor of the future building.

A public meeting on the project has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, at 7:00 PM at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center at 4805 Edgemoor Lane.

This has a chance to be a very cool project. Only 58 units and 2800 SF of retail means we could see some very cool renderings. I hope they take the aesthetics and facade into account during design. Cool opportunity!

Will the developers be bold enough and take the leap from ultra-luxury to hyper-luxury? I think Bethesda is ready.

Anonymous said...

I thought the property went back up for sale? Did it find a buyer or is the original owner doing the project?

Yay to see lots go up and turn into something useful in downtown Bethesda. Now if only Greenhill will get off their butts and start building up!

Anonymous said...

maybe you could arrange for the completing of the assemblages to make buildable sites

Anonymous said...

Which lots does Greenhill need for assemblage?

Elm said...

It's amazing. I get up and read Robert Dyer's news with my coffee and he's reporting on a new development every day!

Anonymous said...

Elm, I hope that coffee doesn't make you poop excessively!

Anonymous said...

curry house on Cordell and st elmo. then the developer would be working with functional geometry

Anonymous said...

bangkok garden on ST Elmo. they are what is known as "spikes" or "holdouts"

Anonymous said...

If this is your idea of amazing...

Anonymous said...

Do we trust Greenhill would actually assemble and build up if he could get these "spikes"?

Anonymous said...

thats the point of the assembly

I see the mentally ill man child "anonymous" negative blogger has signed on and is posting about his poopy pants and links to his site.

Dyer's readers hope this anonymous guy's employer has Summer Fridays again this year. That will decrease some of his crazy rants here.

Anonymous said...

And this useful link to renderings will be censored and deleted by Robert Dyer in 3... 2... 1...

Anonymous said...

Elm is so weird.

Anonymous said...

Elm is like a child, seems more like it.

Elm said...

Hey man child, If you want to advertise your little blog, pay Dyer for an ad. Be fair about it. I'm sure he'd consider selling you a tiny little ad.

Elm said...

8:04 & 8:05 Yes, and the guy posting about his poopy pants and weird fascination with all things Robert Dyer is perfectly normal in your book?

Why not call that anonymous nut out too? Explain.

Robert Dyer said...

7:36: Maybe use the time you spent spamming on my site to report on the 60% developer tax cut and damning audit of MCPS.

Anonymous said...

"It's amazing. I get up and read Robert Dyer's news with my coffee and he's reporting on a new development every day!"

But...but...MORIBUND!

Anonymous said...

I figure in the next year or two, residents will just get a bill for their portion of what the county is giving developers.

Anonymous said...

8:39AM There are several people on this blog that I find obnoxious and you are
all of them.

Elm said...

8:39 AM In other words, anonymous was scooped. Why wait to read old news on your blog? Robert Dyer always has local news first.

This man child talking about his blog where he recycles Dyer's stories has terrible impulse control.

Anonymous said...

Elm actually makes Dyer seem normal in comparison.

12:10 PM You're not backing up those statements with any facts.

Bally said...

Why are you protecting Greenhill?

Elm said...

2:03 PM Question is, why are you attacking? Reveal yourself if you have personal problem.

Anonymous said...

Or better yet, 2:03 and 12:10 supply your authority / credentials and a list of your successes

Anonymous said...

4:48 PM = Lenny Greenberg

Elm said...

There are a lot of keyboard cowboys posting here. I doubt they'll be able to produce credentials or accomplishments.

Anonymous said...

And you, Elm? Or 4:48?

And Robert Dyer, come to speak of it. All he does is bash without producing credentials or accomplishments.

Anonymous said...

Why did my comment about Greenberg get deleted twice? What comment policy is violated by posting a negative opinion of the man?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Dyer is known. Please refer to his "about us" page. Easily accessible.

Anonymous said...

Totally agree about Lenny from a first hand experience with a rental. These comments are being nice btw.

Robert said...

Why would Dyer delete these comments? Isn't he pretty much offering exactly the same type of opinion in this blog on everything and everyone from the council to developers to other publications and so on.

Anonymous said...

7:18 PM The traditional role of the press in this country has been to hold our elected officials and government accountable. That's exactly what Robert Dyer is doing in Montgomery County.

The Gazette, Patch, etc. never wanted to do the work. And now they're all gone.

Anonymous said...

@ 7:25 PM - Non sequitur. How is Dyer "holding our elected officials and government accountable" by deleting reader comments on his blog?

Robert Dyer said...

7:18: This is an article about a completely different topic, not a place to carry out personal beefs with businesspeople who aren't even part of this project.

Robert Dyer said...

7:25: Yes, and we really need to move on. People need to stop lamenting the "loss" of biased Gazette, and start promoting and sharing websites like mine that are still publishing, and actually holding government accountable.

Anonymous said...

"holding government accountable"

Posting rants based entirely on misguided opinions, ad hominem attacks on politicians, and personal anecdotes isn't exactly what I would call "holding government accountable."

People only visit this site for two reasons:

1. To troll (since you refusal to engage in serious, thoughtful dialogue)

2. To read the legitimate local news between the rants

Robert Dyer said...

11:52: BS. I just wrote a detailed analysis of the budget disaster, the plan to cut taxes for developers, and a state audit of MCPS in the last 7 days alone - none of which was done by any other local news source. I absolutely am holding government accountable. Aside from the occasional Bill Turque article in the Post, I'm the only one doing so.

There's only one main troll commenting here, and 1 or 2 fellow travelers who occasionally weigh in.

Anonymous said...

3:38 you paranoid Birdbrain! You are totally delusional if you still think it's one person actually paid by Hans and your competition to troll you. You're not that important to them. Please try to keep the crazy train on the rail here!

Anonymous said...

So you admit you are wrong about the lone troll. Finally some common sense.

Anonymous said...

"7:18: This is an article about a completely different topic, not a place to carry out personal beefs with businesspeople who aren't even part of this project" - Robert Dyer @ 9:45

Is this new comment policy? Only when you start a new post with a personal beef can we comment directly on it?

So every time you go off topic in your own comments you are violating your comment policy too?

And how is talking about Bethesda developers and development in a post about Betheada development "completely off topic"?

SMH

Anonymous said...

Let's make this comment relavant per Dyer's new revised comment policy.

I'm glad something is going up in this spot with higher density, unlike other similar lots in Bethesda such as the ones held by Greenhill and other landowners.

Anonymous said...

Glad to see a mixed use project on a small lot. Seems many of the very similar Bethesda Greenberg properties could do something similar instead of mediocre face lifts.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of the fallow Greenhill properties, "De Tapas" still says "Opening Spring 2016". There are just three weeks left in that season, and the inside of that building is still just bare wall studs. On the other hand, the Fresh Grill/Dancez Dancez building had some construction activity this week, but with no indication what the place will become.

Greenhill is like Dyer - perpetually "looking busy" but without actually accomplishing anything.

Anonymous said...

Also the NYC mural building that had an imminent tenant is still empty.

Anonymous said...

It would be funny, and appropriate, if homeless people started squatting in that former homeless shelter.

Anonymous said...

And your rants on say equity one isn't a personal beef with businesspeople?

Elm said...

9:53 AM The whole Westbard community apparently has a beef with Equity One's heavy handed tactics. I wouldn't say it's personal.

Elm said...

6:06 AM How many restaurants open exactly on schedule? Isabella's place opened an entire season after what his signage said. (It said Fall 2015, but didn't open until this year).

I read Rockvillenights.com with my coffee every morning and it's always reporting on how delayed the restaurants in Rockville Town Square are.

Nothing new or unique about restaurant openings. We know how byzantine MoCo permitting is.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of move on. Westbard residents need to move on.

Anonymous said...

And the only counterexample to Benny's dozens of moribund properties is "Kapnos Kouzina". Again.

"I read Rockvillenights.com"

I'm sure you do. Too bad no one else does. LOL

Anonymous said...

Like I've said, many read Rockvillenights.
We just leave the rude comments and juvenile antics to you rich folk in Bethesda.

Anonymous said...

Elm, are you defending Greenhill for any particular reason?

Anonymous said...

@ 12:03 PM:

#LoneReader

Elm said...

I just used the example of Rockville Town Square.
Rockville Nights reported on the delays of the Irish Pub and other places.
Restaurants are delayed often due to MoCo byzantine permit process.

Elm said...

How am I defending? I'm saying restaurants rarely open on schedule.
Nothing worth spotlighting one owner.

Robert Dyer said...

4:55: On the contrary, I'm the reason Hans Riemer got into the news business. He and some fellow travelers had to create another outlet to try to knock me off or drown me out. Baba Booey.

Robert Dyer said...

11:48: RockvilleNights.com is the most-read news site in Rockville, and the only full-time news site covering the city. Your comments are sour grapes, knucklehead.

Anonymous said...

Reamer supporters set up a faux news blog to support his crazy ideas. It turned out Bethesda residents don't want to read about Reamer every day (big surprise, right?). Site crashes and burns.

Remember, even the Post said Reamer doesn't do anything.

Robert Dyer said...

11:35: He doesn't have the stamina or energy to do anything. He was about as successful in media as he was on any other issue he's tackled. We need leaders who can actually get the job done.

Anonymous said...

3:53 as a reader without a pony in this race, can you help explain what you mean by Riemer getting into the news business because of you? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

"most-read news site in Rockville"

Source???

Robert Dyer said...

5:43: It was a team effort, but Riemer was one of the players, and beneficiaries. Could have been handled in a less obvious way if he had been smarter.

Robert Dyer said...

10:34: Not only the stats, but, dude, it's also the only full-time Rockville news site in town. You're not the sharpest tool in the drawer, but a tool for sure.

Anonymous said...

5:43 here again. Team effort to do what again? What news business did he and players and beneficiaries start again?

Robert Dyer said...

5:26: An alternative website which they could drive traffic to, so the public could get the official messages of the MoCo Cartel - and a couple of councilmembers in particular.

Anonymous said...

Really? What was Riemer's role in founding and/or operating the site?
