As a historic site, it cannot be demolished and replaced. But under certain guidelines, the existing store building could be expanded, as was recently shown with the former Bethesda U.S. Post Office by the Hyatt hotel.

Is that name correct? In my experience, Street Sense is the name of a newspaper that people use to try and wash your windshield at red lights in New York City.
I have always found it odd that Streetsense the commercial real estate marketing leasing do it all company could or even would use the same name.
The problem with this store was the owner. Nobody from my neighborhood (blocks from the store)went there anymore because the dude behind the counter was such an a-hole to people trying to spend money. Coffee, takeout breakfast and lunch food, snacks for those who want to pop in walking by, and someone smiling inside would make a winning combination. We're all, quite frankly, sick of fighting the horrible parking at Wildwood just to get a sandwich.
@5:16 as a local, what would you say to a Pret a Manger opening up in that space? I htink it would be delightful!
5:16: It does sound like the right retailer in this spot could get a lot of foot traffic from workers and residents within walking distance.
Poppy, you are correct, although you have the wrong city. It's actually the one published by the homeless of Washington DC.

They should sue their asses off for trademark infringement.
The one for New York City is "Street News".
@ 5:49 AM - The one for/by the homeless of Bethesda is "Robert Dyer @ Bethesda Row".
@5:50 I know you are just making a joke, and I did laugh at the image of someone trying to wash the windshield of the Tesla using this website, but Robert is certainly not homeless.
Based on earlier comments I think an Le Pain Quotidien Express is in order for this location.
THE DARK SIDE OF THE BETHESDA COMMUNITY STORE
After {strike}White Flint Mall{/strike} the Bethesda Community Store locked its doors for good this weekend, Monday found the {strike}mall's{/strike} store's landmark {strike}electronic{/strike} Coca-Cola sign along {strike}Rockville Pike{/strike} dark.
{strike}P.F. Chang's{/strike} The Bethesda Community Store's iconic {strike}horses{/strike} barbecue grills were ripped from their pedestals and corralled out front, joined by a solitary take-out bag, as the advance winds of {strike}an Alberta Clipper{/strike} tropical storm swept across the once-full front parking lot. Gone were the signs and menu board. Hungry diners drove up seeking a bite of {strike}Mongolian Beef{/strike} pork barbecue, only to find the restaurant was no more. They staggered demoralized back into their cars, back into the darkness.
Poppy @ 6:10 AM - Robert has denied having a fixed address, frequently and vehemently.
@6:30 are you suggesting he does his youtube food reviews (which are always in the same setting) from a homeless shelter?
"Robert has denied having a fixed address, frequently and vehemently"
Wouldn't you? Would you really want these commenters stalking you IRL (in real life)?
I'm waiting for Dyer's YouTube review of the chicken soup at the Lutheran church.
Funny how Dyer turns off comments for his good buddy Greenberg's post, all the while he shouts about improprieties in our county government.
You are pathetic. The whole lot of you. The hate you spout will come back to you tenfold, if it hasn't already started.
This would include Dyer and his hate for the county council and planning department and Montgomery county, of course.
It's funny because I was actually going to post a comment that I applaud Greenberg for opening up retail frontage where otherwise was a long inactive block with the two store entrances on complete opposite corners only. But I couldn't post because Dyer blocked comments.
Will not be missed for one second both inside and outside with the BBQ. Absolutely one of the worst places in our area. What a tragedy. Inedible BBQ and nastiest people behind the counter as has been said. Why in the hell would someone with that kind of rude demeanor even bother to be in the customer service business? Good friggin riddance.
Only in MoCo can covering elected officials objectively be considered "hate".
Kudos to Robert for not maintaining the closed loop between the MoCo Council and traditional local legacy media. By closed loop, I mean journalists praising Councilmembers and then Councilmembers praising the journalists for praising them.
MoCo residents need more voices like Dyer covering local government.
Elm is a Unic
@ 6:43 PM - IMB (in Mom's Basement).
What a strange stalkerish obsession with personal details of a journalist.
Poor impulse control by anonymous negative man.
Covered developers is different?
Covering developers is different from what?
Dyer is doing a balanced job covering development. I go here to get a holistic view and not just the Council and PR talking points.
"What a strange stalkerish obsession with personal details of a journalist.
"Poor impulse control by anonymous negative man."
Do you actually talk like this in real life?
Balanced? That's a joke, right? Elm is playing a sarcastic polar opposite of Poppy's satire?
Elm is acting like someone who would have no trouble saying the same things face-to-face in real life.
Unlike most of you who need to hide behind a screen.
Yeah, I'm posting as anonymous. I just don't post anything I couldn't or wouldn't say to someone's face. Shouldn't is another story.
You have a good point. If you wouldn't say what you're posting here in person or at least attach your name, why say it at all?
Makes no sense.
Folks need some perspective. Step away from the keyboard or iPhone for a bit.
"Elm" is your real name? LOL
I'm not the one making threatening, weird or stalkerish comments.
Why won't Dyer allow Bethesdans to pay tribute to our fallen?
Why does everything have to be about HIM, HIM and HIM ALONE?
@ 1:35 PM - comments for that thread are disabled in the mobile version, but enabled in the web version. Weird.
Will the snowball stand still be there?
Dyer is deleting comments left and right that reference Karr and Greenhill in a negative light. Talk about a hypocrite!!
Just because you post as anonymous, does not mean you are immune from repercussions.
