Things were looking up for the return of South Street Steaks on Cordell Avenue in recent weeks. After structural repairs were completed on the building that was hit by a car last summer, the cheesesteak restaurant's awning was reattached to the facade. Still, all was silent on the South Street Steaks social media pages. Yesterday, for lease signs appeared on the front and side of the restaurant, suggesting that South Street has decided not to reopen at this location.

Did you contact the owner to find out whether this was more than just a "suggestion"?

That's a real bummer. While the steaks may not have been the best (my homemade ones are better if you ask me) they had very decent fries. I want to know what was in that seasoning mix they sprinkled on the fries so I can replicate it at home.
I'll miss being able to sneak away from my office right across the street to get some fries and a Pibb on fountain that's not from a Freestyle machine.
I agree, this is a shame. This was a hardworking, family-owned business and the cheesesteaks weren't amazing, but they stayed open late even on weeknights, so I was a frequent patron after working late. Not many other options on a Monday at 10:30pm.
What's worse is it seems like this isn't their fault either. Some car hits the building so it has to be closed, and now they are out their livelihood through no fault of their own. Any idea what the family is up to now?
No, things weren't looking up. That place (not with the original owners) served the worst excuse for a Philly cheese steak ever period. As often happens, the founding owners move on and someone (often with no experience) else tries to keep the momentum but it rarely works. Now we have to look not so forward to another crappy offering to take its place.
I miss Philadelphia Mike's.
Peter's Carry-out claims best (only?) cheesesteak in Bethesda. I know their hours are restricted, but I'd like to hear opinions on their food.
Peters is fantastic - agree with the cheesesteak claim and legit breakfast. Much better than Tastee D. Delicias around the corner is very good as well.
