Bethesda construction update: Marriott International HQ and hotel (Video+Photos)

The new Marriott International headquarters and hotel now loom large over the venerable Tastee Diner in downtown Bethesda. They are 10-11 stories high now. The progress comes at a difficult time for the hospitality company, which has been hit hard by the temporary collapse of the travel industry, and just announced that it will extend some employee furloughs until early October.

Looking good and going up reasonably fast so far.

Can't believe Tastee Diner didn't take the Marriott offer. Maybe sales will go back up once Marriott has moved in, but hard to imagine they'll be financially better off in the long run.

How high are the towers going again? I noticed that the shorter of the two red tower cranes was raised higher last weekend. It's fun watching them swivel back and forth during the workday from my office on Cordell Ave.

I think the general rumor was that Marriott only wanted the Tastee lot if they could also get the Woodmont Grill lot, and Woodmont Grill didn’t want to sell. Not to say Tastee didn’t necessarily make it harder for themselves with the public statements of inferior offers. They lost out, but still have a valuable lot. Just not quite as valuable as before when assemblage was a possibility.

I can't believe Woodmont Grill was so dumb. They really make the block look crappier. Maybe the county can buy the two buildings and turn them into a park at some point down the line.
