Bethesda Lidl grocery store construction to start

Work on the interior fit-out of the new Lidl grocery store at 7625 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda is set to begin. A construction permit for the interior work has just been issued by Montgomery County, and has been posted at the site. Some preliminary work on a vestibule area was performed in December 2023. Lidl will be the new anchor tenant of the Bethesda Place development, replacing Safeway.

So weird that a low cost grocery store would pick expensive downtown Bethesda real estate. I guess with Harris Teeter, and Trader Joes nearby they figure there is room for another store.

Not to mention Giant, Safeway and yet another Trader Joe’s. Not sure if the original Trader Joe’s will remain after the new TJ opens at Wisconsin Place in Friendship Heights. Being able to walk to six grocery stores in downtown Bethesda is quite remarkable.

With the grocery stores and Target downtown, you can live a car free lifestyle and still shop for most everyday items.
Three CVS stores as well, but they've become more unpleasant to shop at due to becoming magnets for thieves and instrusive beggars.
The new CVS in the old bank seems to be the easiest to shop at since it's not as known.

I have mixed-use feelings about this.

12:28 PM Several of the Starbucks in downtown Bethesda faced a similar glut and closed. There are still probably at least 4 Starbucks remaining, in addition to other coffee shops/cafes.

10:58pm which Starbucks closed in Bethesda? They've only added in recent years with a new one at Bethesda Hyatt a counters at Teeter and Target.

The one at corner of Bethesda Ave and Wisconsin moved to a new space across the street.

The only Starbucks that closed and was not replaced was the one at 4620 East-West Highway, in October 2020.

Perhaps they will attract value oriented customers, which in this day and age of (cough) Build Back Better, means most everyone. Safeway and Giant are put on notice.
