A public art installation on the facade of the new Brightview Bethesda assisted-living apartment building was far enough along to be partially activated last evening. The LED light strip features a vertical series of art panels. Below the photos of the lit piece are pictures of when it was being installed over the last few days. You can see a close-up view of the electronics behind the art panels in several of those images. Brightview Bethesda is located at 4907 Rugby Avenue.

Perhaps one of the best “art-in-architecture” installations in the city! This will really create a nice vertical accent viewed from Gallery Lane, and really mark an important intersection in the Woodmont Triangle. I’m still not a fan of the beige brick, especially combined with the terra-cotta colored brick accents. Too much of that light colored brick on Rugby for my taste. The north side is much more dynamic, with a nice mosaic of metal panels, and will be quite striking when viewed from the emerging Battery Lane District by Alden.
Looking forward to their grand opening to get a tour. I’m sure this will be very expensive, but for seniors who can afford this, and who need a little (or a lot) of assistance, this will be a great way to stay involved in the activity of the city. It’s great to see a senior assisted living facility be a connected part of a urban area, instead of being isolated in some suburban location or a gated community. That large glass dining room on the roof looks like it will be a great place to view the emerging Bethesda skyline. I image the open air balcony on the top floor, to the right of the artwork, will be a great place for grand dad to sneak out for a cigar, or eventually, as all these younglings age up, a nice vap.
Thanks for this and your other very interesting comments.
“Very expensive”: estimated at ~$6,000 pm, or twice as much as Sunrise: https://www.seniorly.com/assisted-living/maryland/bethesda?latitude=38.984652&longitude=-77.09470920000001
My guess is there will be plenty of demand for Brightview in this location and in its Rockville and Grosvenor locations.
Opps, it’s vape, not vap...
