Bethesda construction update: 4909 Auburn Avenue apartments (Photos)

The 4909 Auburn Avenue apartments project has reached another milestone since my last update. It is now one story above street level. When completed, the building will hold 167 residential units over ground floor retail, and 3 levels of underground parking. A 2024 delivery date is anticipated for the project.

It's a shame more of the block wasn't assembled for the project. The small corner building remaining is awkward (at least it's not as hideous as the sore thumb that is Tastee Diner) and the 1930s SFHs are completely out of place.

The proposed building steps down from 11 stories on Auburn to only 3 or 4 stories in the rear, adjacent to the existing single family residential. Most urban planners believe that transitions from taller to less height densities should be done at abutting rear property lines, as this project is doing. And not at street locations, which creates streets that have dis-similar heights and uses fronting each other.

The worst building in this area is the adjacent office building that includes that nasty new mural.
