Montgomery County police hire Hispanic Community Liaison

The Montgomery County Police Department has hired a Hispanic Community Liaison, it announced in a press release yesterday.  Montgomery County government employee Mariela Leon has previously worked in the Department of Health and Human Services and in the Office of Human Resources. Her father is from Guatemala, and her mother is from El Salvador. Leon was the first member of her family to attend college, and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and Criminal Justice, and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources Management.

At the police department, Leon will be assigned to the Office of Public Information. She is "excited to be part of the Montgomery County Police Department," according to the department's press release.

PIO as it's known. Public information but of no help seemingly with the rampant MS-13 gang activity not to mention other crime perpetrated by the Latin American community in the Montgomery Village area.

Is she a Hispanic Community Liaison police officer. Will she carry a gun and a badge. I'd like to see an experienced well educated officer in that position. Somebody who has served on the front line of our drug war and enjoys communicating with our Hispanic community. Somebody willing to live with the folks with whom they'll be communicating on our behalf.

@2:55 JAC is always up for some good old school racism! "...perpetrated by the Latin American COMMUNITY" The 'community' is not perpetrating crime, some criminals are. You should really have your assisted living nurse read your posts before you hit publish.

12:38: No, she has not been a law enforcement officer. I'm certain we do have more than one Latino officer on the police force who would be well-qualified, but I'm not sure the County is looking very hard, as many of our elected officials are anti-police.

I talked to a guy today who was in court and not one Montgomery County police was there to support a ticket written, so they were all dismissed. This guy got written by a MD State Police and that policeman did show up and he got a big fine for speeding. Just passing along the 2nd hand info.

Would be interested in knowing if the judges are 'second guessing' the cops and / or its just generally bad morale. In DC the po po don't even get out of their patrol cars: how many times have I seen them snap their head "the other way' with infractions right in front of them? I fear MC is going that route too.

I must be a misogynist to think that maybe a Latino male would have been a better choice for this post. Maybe it would have been too much an admission that MS 13 is the deeper problem, maybe they couldn't find a male 'go between.'

I'm sure the gangs will listen to her. Haha.

Just the other day I saw a van with diplomat tags drop off about 12 people at the free Holy Cross clinic shared with Montgomery College over by the DC line on Georgia Ave. I searched the Diplomatic three letter prefix which came up "El Salvador," maybe she'll coordinate those sort of things and have nothing to do with MS 13.
