On the final day of April, let's return to the construction site of the future St. Elmo Apartments development at 4922 St. Elmo Avenue in Bethesda. As you might deduce from the cement mixers parked at street level, concrete is still being poured for the 4-level underground parking garage. The 22-story apartment tower will house 276 luxury apartments, 6000 square feet of ground floor retail, and the aforementioned 220-space parking garage. Developed by Duball, LLC, a Q1 2024 delivery is anticipated.

I am curios how well this brand new, retro inspired tower will fit in. A brand new art-deco replica doesn’t seem to work adjacent to the very modern Bainbridge.
Both Hampton House and 7001 Wisconsin designed by Tortilla Gallas also seem to ape the past instead of reflecting the current era. Chevy Chase Lake, also by Tortilla Gallas, is perhaps the worst offender of modern architectural design theory. Yes, I get that the DC area has a reverence for classic architecture, but enough already with this new fake old stuff.
