TD Bank requests solar panel permits for both future downtown Bethesda branches

TD Bank has requested permits from Montgomery County to attach solar panels to the drive-thru roofs of its two newest branches, both under construction in downtown Bethesda. One is on the former Bethesda Shell gas station site at 7628 Old Georgetown Road, and the second is on the site once home to Bethesda's "last gas" BP station, at 8101 Wisconsin Avenue. Construction of the former is far ahead of the latter, which is just getting started.

As you may recall from my report from their already-open Pike District branch, the company places an emphasis on environmentally-sensitive features at its banks. You can get a preview of the future drive-thru canopies in the above photo, which was taken at the aforementioned Montrose Crossing branch.

Soon to be obsolete. One can deposit checks by scanning them on a mobile phone. And it's just a matter of time before banks unveil autonomous cars to deliver petty cash to their customers.

I hate that they're building this drive through bank next to our Metro station, but at least they take being green seriously.

We do all our banking through JP Morgan Chase, but it is nice to see that disadvantaged people will also be getting the opportunity to use a progressive minded bank in Bethesda. Bravo, TD.

No fighting here. Just for discussion.

What makes TF Bank progressive?

What's the demographics of the surrounding area of the two books of disadvantaged people versus not?

What percentage of people use branches?

Do businesses use branches?

What's the thinking to put two branches so close together?

What's the cost benefit analysis of a branch? Would be fun to see.

Wouldn't some other services or housing or something be more beneficial to disadvantaged people than two branches so close to one another?

Anonymous 6:06 AM -- I concur. These are all good questions -- that probably should have been asked (or possibly were, but ignored) prior to building this branch.

@6:06 Solar panels make TD progressive. Renewable energy is something us progressives have always lead the way on.

Tsk...tsk..tsk... Another nouveau riche.

Should have been: "...something on which we progressives have always lead the way."

You're welcome.

Boycotting their Bethesda branches.

Closed my personal and business accounts with TD because of this. Encouraging all my peers and fellow business owners to do the same.

Agreed. Definitely not banking with TD anymore and telling everyone I know to switch.

re: Anons with boycotting ideas -- am I missing something? Just because they put up solar panels on the building y'all are going to boycott them? Or is there some other reason for said action?
