Lucy to close at Bethesda Row

Lucy Activewear will close at Bethesda Row by the end of this year, a corporate spokesperson said Thursday. All of the chain's stores and online presence will disappear, and the "athleisure" line of Lucy products will be folded into The North Face, whose parent company owns both brands. No closing date has been announced, and Lucy remains open for business at 7112 Bethesda Lane at this time.

The landlords never seem to learn that affordable rents must be part of the formula. Bethesda Row has a reputation for sky-high rent, which leads to constant churn among the retail and restaurant rate. Federal Realty and JBG are prime offenders, although every Bethesda building owner is guilty of over-charging. Today they can only attract ultra luxury brands, who aren't a good fit for the clientele.

The most popular new place around Bethesda Row is Class 520 ice cream & tea...not even officially part of the Row development.

I liked Lucy. Oh well. Retail in Bethesda is having troubles but at least commercial office space seems to be doing ok. Marriott and now fox 5! How exciting.

I'm sad about Lucy closing, I really like their athletic clothing. Just as comfortable as lululemon and more affordable. But at least the brand is getting folded in to North Face and not disappearing entirely. Wonder if I can snag some of their stuff on sale...?
