Newdale Mews demolished at Chevy Chase Lake (Photos)

The Newdale Mews apartments at Chevy Chase Lake have been demolished. It took about 2 hours per building to raze the 70-year-old complex, Landmark Realty said. The Bethesda-based development firm will build the new Crescent at Chevy Chase luxury apartments on the site, which will be on the future Purple Line light rail route. Delivery is expected in the fall of 2023.

Why is it all housing thee days is promoted as "luxury?" Apartments, condos, "townhomes" are uniformly advertised as being "luxury." As opposed to what? Utilitarian? Generic? With this L-word adjective applied so ubiquitously to all manner of residential shelter it must surely be the case of "luxury" being nothing more than a meaningless filler word, another um, uh, you know, I mean, like --the linguistic equivalent of a Twinkie's empty calories: altogether absent any meaningful nutritional value.

The county should be encouraging more redevelopments like this. Anyone who has lived in a garden-style multi-family from the 50s/60s knows how terribly inefficient and how much of a money suck they are.

Rob, watch out for that scary-looking demolition machine behind you.

6:14: I think the more practical meaning of the label for renters is that all of the new buildings delivered in the last decade tend to have the same contemporary amenities. You're not likely to find those in a 1970s or 1990s apartment building, by comparison. Rooftop deck with grills and fire pit, premium fitness center, currently-trendy countertops and appliances, etc.

Purple Line is a monstrosity bringing more crime to Chevy Chase
This appears to be the most obtrusive of all the lines going right through apartment complexes
Can you imagine being in an apartment which now abuts the railroad line .
Feel bad for Some of those apartment dwellers in Chevy Chase

@6:29 AM: If the police were given the funding and staffing numbers to do their jobs effectively, crime wouldn't be an issue in MoCo. Unfortunately, the MoCo Council hasn't given the police what they need. Besides, you don't need the Purple Line if you steal a car for the crime. Plenty of hardworking people will use the Purple Line to commute and travel. They aren't criminals, and you shouldn't generalize people who will use it.
