Bethesda dispensary ramps up for today's legalization of recreational marijuana in Maryland

Marijuana dispensaries fortunate enough to have obtained licenses for recreational marijuana sales beginning today, July 1, 2023 in Maryland have been ramping up their inventories, and putting new policies in place. Health for Life at 4909 Fairmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda announced its operating hours will expand, beginning today. The new hours will be 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Wednesday (although recreational sales will only be made from 10:00 AM onward; the first hour is for medicinal marijuana purchases only those days), 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Thursday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sundays.

Another change is that Health for Life will now be open on weekends, where it has previously only operated on weekdays. Bethesda apartment and condo dwellers may be in for an unpleasant surprise if their buildings don't have a no-marijuana-smoking policy in place, and neighbors light up their new purchases. The stench factor, along with the potential issue of recreational users operating vehicles, are among the impacts that state and county officials have failed to fully prepare the public for.

If there is a no (tobacco) smoking policy anywhere that should also apply to weed. Folks, take it from me (an old guy) who wasted a fair amount of time and money smoking weed when I was young, it's not good for your health and it's not worth it.

We are not a serious country.

We have a family friend who is a young woman just starting her career. The smell of pot in and around her apartment in DC was so bad that she had to move. This will be a problem in Bethesda and other areas, as you suggest, particularly where apartments, like these, are upwards of a million dollars. All this in addition to huge crowds and not to mention likely a few unsavory types

As if people aren't stupid enough!!

I see the doom and gloom folks are up early this morning. Maybe our new weed laws will cause a noticeable increase in the amount of weed being smoked in Bethesda, but I seriously doubt it. Weed is one of those things that you either enjoy or don't enjoy. The folks who have been enjoying it for years will keep right on enjoying it, and the folks who haven't, won't suddenly start. It's nonsense to think otherwise.

As for the smell, let's pass some law against burning garlic or other spices in our foods within 50' of our nearest neighbor. We need new laws for that. We already have plenty of laws against smoking. Enforcing them starts at home.

Shanel, Shanel,Shanel, apples and oranges. Pot smell will be everywhere and is extremely unpleasant the end.

8:02 Rationalizes weed with cooking with garlic? This is someone who's been using for way too long and can't tell the difference between a carcinogen and food.

Seriously, BITD when I used to smoke pot while partying down by the railroad tracks or the Psyche Delly or wherever, the only thing that weed did was make me paranoid AND give me the munchies, and now yer' telling me this is all legal now (to be abused by all) because the new make up of MD/MoCo voted for it? There WILL be hell to pay... in one form or another. SMDH

How naive.

Shanel is the spawn of when naivete meets disingenuous.

8:02, that's just nuts.
Before this, some people in this area probably didn't buy pot because they were worried about the illegality, the quality, and/or dealing with some of the sellers.
Now that all of those problems are solved, some of those people will probably want to give it a try, to see if they're among the people who enjoy it-- particularly if their friends are already doing it, or interested in trying it.

5:09 - One of the funnier comments and spot on. Well done.

So glad boomers have a place on the internet to cry.

Having “Smoke-Free” Policies in most apt buildings hasn’t stopped certain people (including my neighbor) from using Pot. The only reason he does it sparingly and not all the time is because I personally spoke to him twice. Now with it being Legal more and more people will be smelling it in apt buildings that are supposed to be “smoke free”. Get Ready !!

Typical boomer sentiment, crying over the failed war on drugs.

@ 6:23 AM - Marijuana is legal for recreational use in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Uruguay, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Lesotho, South Africa and Thailand.

Are those countries also "not serious"?

None of countries 10:59 lists are in the top 10 in productivity in GDP per capita. Encouraging the race to the bottom isn't a good look but weed will help us get there. Sad indeed.

Hey JAC and 509 Whatever my neighbors are burning can not be described as food. It smells way too bad to be food. If they're eating it, then I know they must stink in public worse than any weed ever smelled. As far as second hand through the wall vents or lingering around in the hallway carcinogens, I question whether weed is more dangerous.

This was so hard, but then again I'm not a user:

"Smoked marijuana delivers THC and other cannabinoids to the body, but it also delivers harmful substances, including many of the same toxins and carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals) found in tobacco smoke,3 which are harmful to the lungs and cardiovascular system."

2:45am It's amazing people like your neighbor continue to smoke this stuff and piss off his neighbors rather than ingesting another way such as gummies.

I still remember high school health class, when they told us smoking pot was the equivalent of "smoking 10 packs a day" of cigarettes. How times and messages change when government and their cronies can make a buck.
