Aventino/AP Pizza Shop set opening date in Bethesda

Aventino
and sister pizzeria AP Pizza Shop have been looking ready to open any day now at 4747 Bethesda Avenue, and now there is an opening date. Chef-owner Mike Friedman announced on Instagram that both will open next Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Aventino will feature Italian cuisine - specifically, that of The Eternal City. New Jersey deck-oven pizza will be the specialty of AP Pizza Shop, by the pie or by the slice, with a walk-up takeout window on Bethesda Avenue for the aspiring John Travoltas of Bethesda. Go ahead and stack the slices - no judgement!

Ok. Detroit -style, New Haven, Chicago deep dish, all of which I know and have eaten. But NJ deck-oven? NJ folks please inform us. We'll see. Lots of comp in the area. By the way, had Frank Pepe last night. Once again. It is in a word, incredible!

Looking forward to it!

They have to accept CASH, right?

JAC, I'm not sure what it is myself; perhaps it's what Wikipedia refers to as a "Trenton tomato pie" or "New Jersey tomato pie".

Had some AP Pizza Shop pizza tonight. Ordered a plain cheese pizza (I think it was called Russa or something like that on the menu). My opinion: The crust was very good but I couldn't really taste the sauce and cheese. It wasn't bad, just non-flavorful ingredients I guess. Aventino was closed for staff training but full of people enjoying meals. Looked like a well-run operation. If you could combine Andy's sauce and cheese with AP crust, it'd be unstoppable. I actually think Ledo's tastes better than all the downtown Bethesda pizza places, but they don't deliver and it's not walkable if you live downtown, so what can ya do? In any case, I hope they're both successful and long-lived given that corner has just lost 2 restaurants in the last month. I think Aventino will be a hit. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the food and wine immensely from what I could see through the windows.
