Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones abruptly announced his retirement this morning, January 30, 2024. He has served the public for 38 years, the last four of them as chief. His retirement will be effective Monday, July 1.
“It has been an honor to lead such a dedicated and talented department of officers and professional staff. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident in the department’s continued success,” Chief Jones said in a statement. “Now is the right time to retire. I am grateful for the support I have received throughout my career. While I may be stepping down a few months earlier than originally planned, I won’t be far. You will still see me around, actively engaging in and contributing to the well-being of Montgomery County.”
A department press release states that the search for a new police chief will begin immediately. Chief Jones did not cite a specific reason for his retirement, nor for moving his retirement date up to July 1.

A chance for fresh blood at the top? Cool. Maybe we'll see some of the needed changes in the MCPD. (No, I'm not posting selfies of myself holding my breath on that, but it's nice to fantasize, isn't it?)
Seems vaguely odd Chief Jones would retire two years shy of a nice, round four decades. Maybe that's just my OCD-ness, wanting things tidy and even. I wonder if he was encouraged to leave or if he'd just had a nose full of the Council telling him how to do his job.

Not very effective in dealing with this current crime crisis. You now have open air shootings in downtown SS. But to be fair, the far Left Wing lunacy of Elrich & Co doesn't allow the police chief to do much. You have Will Jawando who claims racism for everything. Total joke all the county councilmembers. I certainly don't blame the chief for hanging it up. All his good officers are doing the same. A friend of mine was a longtime cop here and had reached retirement. He punched his ticket and is now an officer in FL. Loving it.

He might have two years of sick leave which might be added to his years of service to get to the magical 40 years of service you are looking for. What ever prompted him to retire, I hope he enjoys his retirement.
Good riddance to any LEO that supports keeping the blue lights burning on their 'stealth' light bars. The criminal element laughs at this policy. Chief Ramsay, a previous incompetent DC Police chief brought this stupid idea back from a junket trip to Israel. The 'street crime' there is entirely different than here: announcing your presence here is plain stupid.

You may have forgotten the carjacking near OGR and Wisconsin where a fitearm was discharged even after the car was turned over.

The blue lights are about Police image, to let citizens know the police are present. The blue lights are not about stopping crime. What the blue lights do is temporarily move or suspend crime merely giving the perps the advantage. I don't think MC us quite as embracing of crime as DC (yet), MPDC squad cars are mobile WiFi stations: just look at your phone and you can see when they're nearby, sometimes within a few blocks. Great idea!
