Chevy Chase Nissan leaves downtown Bethesda for Pike District (Photos)

Reedman Toll Nissan
in North Bethesda
Chevy Chase Nissan is no more at 7701 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The Nissan dealership has been acquired by the Reedman Toll automotive group, and moved "up the Pike" to 11605 Old Georgetown Road in the Pike District. Now known as Reedman Toll Nissan, the business takes over a vacated auto dealership directly across the street from Federal Realty's Pike & Rose development.

The vacated Nissan space in downtown Bethesda, in turn, is now holding used cars for the adjoining Chevy Chase Cars - primarily Acuras. Chevy Chase Cars has rebranded the former Nissan building as its "Pre-Owned Supercenter."

Nissan has quite a few nice cars these days, and has just announced it will soon be offering a semi-autonomous driving system called ProPilot on some U.S. models. The zero-emission Leaf, and revamped GT-R supercar are my personal favorites. Also, I like the fact that their vans and minivans actually look like vans, in contrast to some brands these days.

I also was given a Nissan Versa Note when renting a car in the last couple of years, and it was a surprisingly nice vehicle. It did not feel like a budget compact car, and I actually enjoyed driving it.

signage?? get real. it's a sign

Robert Dyer said...

6:00: Any individual sign qualifies as signage. In this case there are multiple signs - again, signage. And in your case, your Saul Alinsky-on-acid tactics are tiresome. "Get real."

I thought the abandoned dealership where they moved was going to be demolished to make way for the new conference center parking garage and road re-alignments in Pike and Rose that were supposed to start this summer. Is this a temporary move?

Thanks for this informative article!

(More of these please and less blusterous rants about Hans Riemer!)

I think it's a different former abandoned dealership that's scheduled to be demolished. Weren't there 3 dealerships along that strip of Old Georgetown?

signage as per dictionary.com:

noun
1.
graphic designs, as symbols, emblems, or words, used especially for identification or as a means of giving directions or warning.

just saying the word is similar to installing curb feelers on a mercedes... ftard!

@ 7:07, 7:07 AM - I thought maybe it was the Saab dealer, but that was at 11565.

Upper Old Georgetown Road has become the Boulevard of Broken Automotive Dreams.

7:20: I'm totally vindicated by the dictionary. Thank you.

@6:39
The Conf. Center garage and Market Street access road (as well as the portions of realigned Executive Blvd. that fall on the property), will be constructed entirely on the existing parking lot on the Conference Center property so that won't be (directly) affected.

What is concerning is that this will disrupt the construction of the full Western Workaround street grid (which was supposed to immediately follow the Conference Center garage construction) since the Nissan dealership will occupy the right-of-way. This is probably a temporary move as Reedman is leasing the site. Plus, the property doesn't provide a lot of inventory space for a major brand like Nissan (not that the Chevy Chase site did either), and the service/showroom structure is over 40 years old and obsolete. Wouldn't be surprised if the dealer eventually packed and moved to the main PA location.

Otherwise, it really is mind-boggling that the County makes these infrastructure plans without talking to the landowners or acquiring the land (See: Shady Grove Bus Garage Redevelopment). I'm sure both this property and the former Saab property were readily available since both were long vacant. Hopefully this is a (very) temporary move. The site doesn't provide nearly enough space for a

The full Western Workaround will realign Executive to meet Grand Park Ave and reconfigure the existing intersection at Old Georgetown and Executive so that Old Georgetown connects to Hoya. Eventually Market Street will stretch east to MD 355 then cross the Metro station on a bridge into the LCOR property.

Still waiting for Dyer to provide an example of an elected official whose goal is to "ban all cars".

7:34 AM Smart European urban centers are already creating car free zones. Why not here?

From Business Insider Dec 2015
"Eight US states plus five countries across the globe want to ban new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2050, Car and Driver reports.

That means, in 35 years, California, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Massachusetts — plus Oregon and Vermont — will prohibit automakers from selling new gas or diesel-powered vehicles in their states."

I could see creating a swath of downtown Bethesda as a car free zone.
Close off the streets except for bikes and pedestrians.

Anonymous said...

@ 8:15 AM - that's not "ALL cars", you birdbrain. In fact, it won't even change the number of cars that are on the road.

Have a car-free zone in the New Westbard and name it "Place du Machine de MeauQueau".

Former Vice President Al Gore and former Mexican President Felipe Calderon are pushing for $90 trillion in spending to ban cars from every major city in the world and make them more dense.

Gore and Calderon presented a report from the Global Commission on the Economy & Climate (GCEC) and argued that fighting global warming will require making cities more compact and wholly reliant on public transit. This is the only way to make sure urban areas don’t contribute to global warming, the two politicians argued.

@ 8:51 AM - It appears that your idea of "research" is to stop reading the moment you find a statement that appears to support your position.

Daily Heckler can't be bothered to provide a direct quote where Gore or Calderon actually said "ban cars from every major city in the world".

Here is what Calderon actually said, from the linked article in Business Insider: "We cannot have these cities with low density, designed for the use of cars. We recommend those cities should have more density and more mass transportation."

In other words, he is saying that better design of cities will make cars less necessary than they are now. That's not the same as saying "ban all cars from every major city in the world".

Regarding the Jalopnik article, Oslo is a relatively small city and the car ban only covers its central area. Also, it's not in the USA.

I hope my providing links has helped educated you.

You know, the original question was
"provide an example of an elected official whose goal is to "ban all cars"."
Where did you specify only US?

Ever been to Michigan's Mackinac Island? No cars.

Anonymous said...

Educate not educated. My mistake.

Anonymous said...

If your goal is to "help educate", then it's not a good idea to link to articles such as the one from Daily Caller which can't be bothered to actually quote the subjects of the article correctly.

Anyway, here is Dyer's comment from a couple of days ago, which started this discussion:

"The future of autonomous vehicles scares the hell out of control freaks and big government types who aspire to ban private auto ownership..."

https://robertdyer.blogspot.com/2016/07/tesla-critics-dont-dampen-enthusiasm.html

Dyer in a comment on that article @ 10:00 AM: "The people who have advocated phasing out private auto ownership, and restriction of autonomous cars to publicly-owned fleets, are numerous and on the record."

Dyer in a comment on that article @ 2:54 PM: "They are not dumb enough to explicitly state their intent. But a quick Google search brings up many such advocates, quoted in newspapers, major magazines, Mashable, Wired, etc. Even your beloved GGW. Classic Alinsky tactics to try to divert from the topic."

Yet neither he nor you can actually find any actual examples of this.

Anonymous said...

"They are numerous and on the record" but not "dumb enough to explicitly state their intent".

LOL, Classic Dyer.

Again, 10:18AM I fail to see where you specified US. There was only one post about this in this thread and I replied.
You not approving of my answer is all on you.

Anonymous said...

Sorry - that was for 10:05. Apologies.

Anonymous said...

As far as educating goes, the point is to give you the tools to do the learning yourself.
As it stands, you seem to have read up and are now more knowledgeable than when you began.
You're welcome.

Anonymous said...

11:03 AM - Nice try. You hastily posted a couple of links that didn't say what you thought that they did, in desperate hope that Dyer would let you out of Mom's basement's sub-basement for a few hours.

Anonymous said...

11:09 - Sorry, you're wrong again. Wrong. Not one iota of information in your post is valid. Zero.
I posted links to be helpful. A few things I'd read and found interesting and thought others might too.

So, unless you’re my thong, don’t be all up my ass.

Robert Dyer said...

10:18: Typical BS - the commenter made it appear both quotes were referring to the same people. In reality, my second quote was in response to his demand to know of actual elected officials who had called for a ban. I then replied correctly that none of them have been dumb enough to do so. But the many people who have advocated for such a ban are indeed on the record in the publications I cited, among others. STOP LYING.

Anonymous said...

7:17 PM - "the many people who have advocated for such a ban are indeed on the record in the publications I cited, among others. STOP LYING."

If they're "on the record in those publications", it should be very easy for you to find an actual, direct quote to back up your claims, and post or link to it here.

7:22: If you're that ignorant to the topic, why are you even arguing about it, Saul Alinsky?

Wrol said...

That Chevy Chase Nissan dealership, Bethesda Jazz and Supper Club, and Whitney juxtaposition is so odd. It's like a huge design compromise the whole way through and it looks terrible.

Anonymous said...

Ha ha, Dyer... you still don't get it, do you? You're the one making the claim - it's your obligation to prove it, it's not anyone else's obligation to prove a negative.

Anonymous said...

@ 4:01 AM - Must have been designed by Karr.

Robert Dyer said...

5:01: You sound poorly educated - you are the one trying prove no one was advocating phasing out private ownership of cars. That's called "proving a negative" in the English language, which may not be your first language.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations, Dyer. You have it exactly backwards. It was you who made the original claim. My asking you to prove your claim is not the same as if I had made an entirely new claim.

Birdbrain.

Anonymous said...

9:23AM Why should he answer you? Everything you post also includes an insult.

Robert Dyer said...

9:23: Sorry, punk, it is you who demanded I "prove a negative."

Anonymous said...

Dyer @ 1:14 PM - You're a birdbrain if you can't understand this basic principle.

All you need to do is provide ONE direct quote from a person who believes as you claim, and actually has the power to implement such a policy.

Anonymous said...

He claimed: "they are not dumb enough to explicitly state their intent"
And you demand he provides a direct quote of something no one said? How's that supposed to work?

Anonymous said...

Ha it doesn't seem his style. Karr seems to only have one style he repeats over and over again.

Anonymous said...

Why do you care so much to defend someone you don't even know?

Anonymous said...

I make observations and ask questions. You folks read intent and purpose into it. And, damn, can you folks get nasty.

Anonymous said...

"They are not dumb enough to explicitly state their intent".

In other words, Dyer can't provide any actual quotes, just... telepathy.

The old Georgetown site that Reedman Toll took over used to be VOB Nissan. VOB also had the Saab Dealership they built new years ago two doors down (with a Chevy Chase Bank between them) that also closed since Saab was shuttered in 2012.

It doesn't make much sense for Reedman Toll, a Phili, PA based dealership chain, to buy the franchise rights to Nissan in high traffic and affluent Rockville/Bethesda MD and then "move it to PA" as was suggested above. If the Old Georgetown location, which is in prime White Flint property across from Pike and Rose, won't be renovated by Reedman Toll, I'd guess they'd move it somewhere nearby or build a new facility from scratch. I could easily see them buying the land for the Chevy Chase bank next door, and the old VOB Saab dealer plot, and having one contiguous piece of land connecting the old VOB Saab and Nissan Stores, and build a new facility for Nissan there that would then have ample room. There's a parking lot acorss from Saab on Executive where they used to store cars and still is a parking lot today, so that could solve the issue.
