Two die in Bethesda house fire overnight

Two people died in a fatal house fire in Bethesda early this morning. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel responded to a home in the 4900 block of Western Avenue just prior to 1:00 AM, and found the structure engulfed in flames, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer. Two people Piringer said were believed to be the only residents of the home were rescued from the blaze by firefighters, but were pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Piringer said that these were the first fatalities of the year in a Montgomery County residential fire. Western Avenue remained closed between River Road and Westmoreland Circle as rush hour approached due to fire department activity. The cause of the fire is now under investigation. There is no word yet as to whether or not the home had functioning smoke detectors.
