Friendship Heights construction update: Potbelly (Photos)

Things are moving slowly on the interior construction of Potbelly Sandwich Shop at 4459 Willard Avenue in the Village of Friendship Heights. I say this because the sign went up seven or eight weeks ago, and the inside is still not very far along.

Regarding the CCT tunnel, ‘You can give your feedback on this, and the design of the project, at Wednesday night's meeting”” but they are not apparently welcome on this site.

I agree the country should have linked the cost of the tunnel to the minor masterplan amendment, but at this point in time I would like to raise another question. Do we really need a tunnel?

The county is about to install a very nice surface route with a separated bike path that will connect the CCT at Ourisman all the way to Elm Park and the newly extended CCT that will be ead6 of downtown. This separated bike path will start on the south side of Bethesda Avenue in front of Pottery Barn, then cross the intersection diagonally with a special ”all stop” signal for the bike path. It will the run on the north side of Bethesda Avenue and cross Wisconsin in a second ”all stop” signal.

These systems are designed to create very safe protected and signal protected paths for bike to cross two very busy intersections. In this time of fiscal stress, do we really need a second separate path under Wisconsin, in a very expensive tunnel. The grade is predicted to be quite steep, and may include a few curves that limit visibility. As I recall the old tunnel was a bit scary for some folks, being a bit isolated.

I know that the portion under the Apex building is already constructed, but I really wonder why we need two parallel paths to cross Wisconsin. The proposed tunnel would not eliminate the Bethesda Avenue/Woodmont Avenue crossing, so if traffic can be safely crossed there, why not assume the Wisconsin crossing at grade would be adequate, if not superior to an expensive sloping, curving and perhaps intimidating tunnel?

If even a portion of the cost of a tunnel could be applied to an even better surface route, would we all be better off? If the surface path is not ideal, maybe improve it further with a more substantial barrier, better landscaping, nicer bike crossing signals, better pedestrian/bike lane lighting, more creative paving, or better signage. Certainly cheaper than the tunnel cost. Let the developer repurpose the already constructed portion of the tunnel as a linear bike storage facility, and repurpose the proposed two level bike parking garage as a nice retail space, maybe even a big bike store that would face the Capital Crescent Civic Green.

Robert Dyer said...

7:01: I think the primary two issues are that people feel safer not having to cross 355, and secondly, the surface route will force cyclists to make several additional stops.

Anonymous said...

Isn't the CCT/Purple Line tunnel under a state highway, not a county road, and not private (i.e. "developer") property?

Also, it's disappointing to see that the NIMBYs of Westbard were already doing their dirty work several decades ago when they blocked that Hechinger's.

"Alas, there's no indication the parking lot [at Kenwood Station} will get any updates. It shares the title of Most Frustrating Parking Facility in Bethesda with Trader Joe's - or at least the ones people talk about most often."

So...why not offer suggestions on how that parking lot could be improved? Light a candle instead of perpetually cursing the darkness.

Anonymous said...

I guess it comes down to the question of safety. An inexperienced bike rider would likely prefer a slower, but more level pathway, even if it required two stops to wait for a protected crossing signal. These inexperienced rides might also be a bit intimidated in an underground tunnel with curves and fast moving spandex clad bike commuters who would not mind a bit of grade elevation if they don’t have to stop.

Having both a tunnel and a surface trail would be great, but very expensive and currently unfunded. My only thought was to make sure the surface route is as good as it can be, even if they need to spend a few bucks more, in lieu of the much more expensive tunnel option. I bet the developer might even pay the county to enhance the surface route if required, if it meant they could repurpose the 250 bike parking garage as retail space and use the already built tunnel for bike parking. They might need to add a fire exit stair near Wisconsin, but would gain lots of retail space with very tall ceilings, facing the new Civic Green.

On the other hand, we can always build the tunnel in the future. I predict that when the CCT is opened to Silver Spring, the new Red Line entrance, Purple Line Station and perhaps the Bethesda Market and new underground county parking deck are all built, this area will get much more bike traffic.

Why is Ourisman allowed to park a Jeep in the public right of way? The county needs to tow it and charge them to recover the vehicle. The Acura dealership does the same thing. Somehow they both seem to think they own the sidewalk in front of their premise.

Also, his article about the closure of the eastern Red Line this weekend still gives the incorrect name for the Metro station between Fort Totten and Silver Spring.

Robert Dyer said...

8:12: LOL - I was hoping you would let this go so I wouldn't have to embarrass you any further, but you asked for it.

In the lifetime of Metro in MoCo, I've never heard anyone refer to the "Takoma Metro Station." Maybe in DC, but not here, where it is commonly referred to as the Takoma Park Metro station. As a lifelong resident who actually used the station when attending classes at the beautiful Takoma Park campus of Montgomery College, I can once again issue a Carpetbagger Alert for a clear carpetbagger such as you.

Anonymous said...

The Takoma Metro station is not in the beautiful city of Takoma Park in vivibund Montgomery County. It is in the Takoma neighborhood of the District of Columbia, just west of Eastern Avenue.

I don't know what random weirdos you talked to as you were walking to and from your classes at Montgomery College*, but the name of the station has always been "Takoma", alone. On the Metro train announcements. On the system maps. On the Metrobus and Ride-On maps and schedules.

Why don't you just admit you made a mistake, instead of doubling-down and gaslighting?

*I thought you were a UMCP grad?

Robert Dyer said...

8:22: I didn't make a mistake. Understandably you're now moving the goalposts from what you mistakenly think MoCo residents call it, to the actual address. Understandable from a desperate carpetbagger trying to change Montgomery County from the outside.

Anonymous said...

Dyer doesn't even understand what the phrase "moving the goalposts" actually means.

Moving the goalposts is an informal fallacy in which evidence presented in response to a specific claim is dismissed and some other (often greater) evidence is demanded. That is, after an attempt has been made to score a goal, the goalposts are moved to exclude the attempt. The problem with changing the rules of the game is that the meaning of the result is changed, too.

In the case of the Metro station between Fort Totten and Takoma, a reader pointed out that the name of this station is "Takoma" rather than "Takoma Park" as blogger Robert Dyer had written, incorrectly, on his "East County" blog a few days ago. Pointing out the correct name of the station is hardly "moving the goalposts".

It is in fact Robert Dyer who is making the logical fallacy, by citing imaginary "MoCo residents" to back up his erroneous claim about the station name.

Robert Dyer said...

9:57: It's not even clear that you understand the full meaning of "moving the goalposts" from that simplistic definition. But even by your definition, you absolutely were moving the goalposts.

The original argument was about what you, as a carpetbagger, thought Montgomery County natives call the Takoma Metro station. Just as a tourist would use a travel guide as reference, you went with the official title. Alas, you were wrong, just as a MoCo limousine liberal would mispronounce "Stanton" in Virginia.

Caught as a carpetbagger, you then "demanded greater evidence," moving the argument to the specific street address of the station - totally irrelevant to what MoCo natives call the station.

Here's a definition that applies to you:

Carpetbagger (noun) - Outsider opportunists looking to exploit and profit from a region's misfortunes; a person perceived as an unscrupulous opportunist.

Nope. It is not a "trestle". It is a steel beam bridge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trestle_bridge

Try learning what words actually mean, before you use them in print.

http://robertdyer.blogspot.com/2018/09/signs-lit-for-anthropologie-co-and.html

Robert Dyer said...

5:17: Any elevated track can be described as a trestle, dumbass. Elevated portions of the Glen Echo streetcar line are today still referred to as trestles. A bridge connects track over a gap. This elevated Purple Line track is most certainly not a bridge. You know as much about engineering as you do about self checkout machines, Einstein.

Anonymous said...

Um, no, Dumbass. "Trestle" refers specifically to a type of structure built of wood, and wood alone.

There are no "elevated portions" of the "Glen Echo streetcar line" (actually Cabin Jon streetcar line", not "Glen Echo streetcar line"), because it ran at surface level. Short railroad bridges and viaducts are not "elevated railroads".

You are such a Carpetbagger Retard, Dyer.

Robert Dyer said...

10:00: LOL, you once again prove to be the ultimate carpetbagger and ultimate dumbass. Trestles can be made of anything. I am a rail transportation expert, unlike you and your heroes on the corrupt County Council.

The Glen Echo streetcar has many trestle sections, some of which remain and are crumbling in the woods on the Maryland side of the route. There were elevated sections between Georgetown University and what is now the Montessori School of Washington on the other side of Foxhall Road. I know because I rode under one in a car hundreds of times, Saul. You were living in some out-of-state hellhole at that time, and have no clue about the Glen Echo streetcar.

Anonymous said...

The streetcar did not terminate at Glen Echo. It terminated at the south end of the Cabin John Bridge. People who were actually born here recognize the gravelly area opposite the west end of Wilson Lane at MacArthur Boulevard. Thus, it is named the "Cabin John streetcar line".

"Elevated" has a specific meaning when referring to railroads - meaning running on a continuous aerial structure along and over a street. The Silver Line running through Tysons Corner is an example of an elevated line. Rail lines running on the surface, on embankments in private right-of-way, or across short bridges do not meet this definition.

Also, the bridge on the Cabin John Line at Foundry Creek (M Street at the southwest corner of the Georgetown University campus) is a steel bridge, not a "trestle". "Trestle" is not a synonym for "rail bridge". It refers to a specific type of wooden structure.

Robert Dyer said...

7:00: All aboard the Carpetbagger Express!! Obviously, you weren't born here, because the streetcar did indeed terminate at Glen Echo. It then simply turned around via a loop track prior to the bridge you refer to.

You also obviously are not familiar with the topography of the streetcar line. Indeed, there are elevated sections, including those that remain in the woods past Glen Echo. You are also 100% wrong that a trestle is only a wooden structure. The CCT uses a metal trestle by Arizona Avenue that is called a...trestle!

I've not only lived here my whole life, but am an expert on railroads, and your arguments are just factually and empirically wrong.

You've taken more pratfalls on this page than Chevy Chase. Please call it quits before you make a total fool of yourself again.

Anonymous said...

"All aboard the Carpetbagger Express!! Obviously, you weren't born here, because the streetcar did indeed terminate at Glen Echo. It then simply turned around via a loop track prior to the bridge you refer to."

So what you're saying is that the streetcar line "terminated" at Glen Echo, then continued another mile in the same direction before turning around at the east end of the Cabin John Bridge, then made the return trip.

Do you understand what the word "terminate" actually means?

Robert Dyer said...

5:20: Unlike you, I do know terminate means the last stop on the line, which was indeed Glen Echo.

Anonymous said...

Dyer @ 7:15 AM - No revenue service at all on the entire 2-mile round trip from Glen Echo to the turnaround loop at Cabin John, and back, for every single trip? That seems very unlikely.

You should be embarrassed for defending an Antifa/Deep State political operation that resulted in injury and death, and that to this day has never debriefed the public on the cause of the State Police helicopter crash that killed two state troopers that day nor why Terry McAuliffe and his buddies in Charlottesville intentionally left streets open - complete opposite of standard event procedures - to facilitate what happened.

I'll never be embarrassed to defend Constitutional and human rights, both of which were violated by Virginia elected officials that day.

Anonymous said...

THIS is what Dyer is defending.

THIS is what Dyer is trying to blame on then-Governor Terry McAuliffe and "an Antifa/Deep State political operation".

"At around 1:45 p.m. on August 12, 2017, self-identified white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. deliberately rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away from the rally site, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 other people. Fields fled the scene in his car but was arrested soon afterward; he was tried and convicted in Virginia state court of first-degree murder, malicious wounding, and other crimes in 2018, with the jury recommending a sentence of life imprisonment plus 419 years. The following year, Fields pleaded guilty to 29 federal hate crimes in a plea agreement to avoid the death penalty in this trial."

9:06: No, you don't have any quote where I defend that. The 1st Amendment doesn't permit violence. It does permit freedom of assembly and freedom of speech, no matter whether the majority approves of the people or content in either case. Westboro Church, KKK, Montgomery County Council, Communist Party - it doesn't matter who or what, they still get to assemble and meet.

Are you going on the record as opposed to the 1st Amendment? That makes you sound crazy, not me.

Who is responsible for the violence is McAuliffe et al in elected office, who told police to stand down intentionally, allow violent altercations, and left streets open to vehicles during a massive pedestrian event. Even in Montgomery County for far smaller events, police regularly close and barricade streets to vehicles. You know that full well. Virginia's "progressive" Neo-Commies have yet to be held accountable for their active role in the serious injuries and death that resulted from their deliberate actions in government office.

Human agency is the capacity for human beings to make choices and to impose those choices on the world. It is normally contrasted to natural forces, which are causes involving only unthinking deterministic processes.

"On August 12, 2017, a car was deliberately driven into a crowd of people who had been peacefully protesting the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one and injuring 28. The driver of the car, 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr., had driven from Ohio to attend the rally. Fields previously espoused neo-Nazi and white supremacist beliefs. He was convicted in a state court of hit and run, the first-degree murder of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, and eight counts of malicious wounding, and sentenced to life in prison with an additional 419 years in July 2019. He also pled guilty to 29 of 30 federal hate crime charges to avoid the death penalty, which also resulted in another life sentence handed down in June 2019."

Robert Dyer said...

5:26: How did the car get to the crowd?

Via the human agency of McAuliffe and Charlottesville leaders who intentionally and willfully left roadways open. I note that the media has conveniently not sought, nor has the CIA released as they now regularly and illegally do via leaks, the full phone conversations and electronic communications of all of the relevant elected officials in the weeks and days prior to the Unite the Right event.

You can post the resume and factoids about a killer paroled from prison, but the governor who let him out will still be guilty of the "human agency" that allowed him to kill again. Same goes in Charlottesville, Boy Friday. Anyone with half a functioning brain closes off streets to auto traffic during major crowd events. We do this all the time in Montgomery County, and you know that.

Damn, son, you just got destroyed.

Funny how your article on Metro in Virginia omits this week's news that the opening of the second phase of the Silver Line - which will give Virginians a direct connection to Dulles Airport for the first time - has been delayed for at least a year, possibly much longer.

Also, I note that your time-stamps for today's article - which is the only news on all four blogs of "Suburban News Network" - is incorrect. Even accounting for the fact that the Bethesda blog's clock is 3 hours behind lifelong-Bethesda-resident time, the article was posted well after 9:00 AM Eastern, yet all four have the time-stamp of "8:00 AM" ("5:00 AM" for the Bethesda blog).

"How did the car get to the crowd?"

It wasn't a self-driving Prius. One of your racist buddies deliberately drove straight into that crowd. No one in the Virginia or Charlottesville governments forced him or even encouraged him in any way to do that.

And thanks for showing that you don't have the slightest understanding of what the term "human agency" actually means, in spite of having it explained to you in the comment immediately preceding.

You just mindlessly copy and paste, and parrot things other people say and write, without any understanding of what you are saying or doing.

Why would the Red Line go up from Metro Center to Shady Grove and beyond to Clarksburg?, then go all the way back down and over to Dulles? That would be a really dumb route, especially if it's also going to Clarksburg. Going from Metro Center to Dulles would be 60 miles one-way, not just dumb but a logistical nightmare.

Do you ever actually think things through before you write them?

Robert Dyer said...

Meanwhile Virginia seems to be willing to make the tough decisions for short term pain and longer term positive outcomes.

And the Silver Line is quite successful- all of those corporate HQs like Capital One certainly appreciate the new Metro stations steps from their doors. Tysons is being transformed while White Flint has stalled out (except for Pike & Rose). We didn't get the "muscular" urban White Flint that our council promised.

-The old Comsat site is adjacent to I-270 but well out of the walkshed of MD 355.

-Lakeforest Mall is out of the walkshed of I-270 and most of the site is even outside of the walkshed of MD 355.

-The fairgrounds are within the walkshed of both MD 355 and I-270, but I'm not sure why you want to redevelop it. Where do you propose to hold the annual Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, a beloved tradition for over a century for lifelong residents?

-You can't really design a route that would directly serve all three sites.

Dyer fakes the time stamps again.

How come Dyer hasn't posted his article about the proposed tax changes on the Bethesda blog? He posted it on all of the other blogs in the "Network". [Timestamp 9:40 AM EST, 6:40 AM Dyer Time]

"Last year, Councilmember Evan Glass (D - At-Large) proposed a "teardown tax," also known as a "McMansion tax." It would have taxed new construction homes that replaced existing homes, and then place an excise tax on the square footage added. The proposal was blasted by homebuilders, many of whom would have been forced out of business by the new taxes. Local media did their darndest to promote Glass and his tax, but rarely told the public that he did not even have the votes on the Council to pass it."

That's funny, I can't find any record of this in this blog. Surely Dyer would have reported it at the time.

6:41: Very simple - Blogger timed post failed to upload it at the pre-programmed time. That's Google's fault, not mine.

Robert Dyer said...

6:46: Just because you can't find it doesn't mean it's not there. The Google Blogger search tool is often useless to find something even I'm looking for. But what a weird approach to the debate, which indicates you cannot argue on the facts of the issue.

‘Chase Trust building is arguably the most-recognized modern building in downtown Bethesda’

Based on what data? A survey of just you? Not like you went around asking people for their input. You just pull these stats out of thin air?
Such hyperbole Robert makes you look stupid and down right sad
You have no job or friends and I can’t see people on the street wanting to talk to you

"The landmark WMAL radio towers at 7115 Greentree Road aren't likely to be there too much longer."

Well, Duh...other sites have reported exactly when they are coming down. But I'm not doing your homework for you this time.

Robert Dyer said...

5:25: No they haven't, dumbass. And if they had, their published date would be incorrect.

Not only can you not demolish without permits in hand, which haven't been issued, but someone actually working on the project confirmed rumors that the demolition has been delayed.

"Considering that the Beltway and I-270 are where a great number of drivers are coming from in the morning, and trying to reach in the evening, this is going to create an incredible bottleneck. Anyone who drives the road during rush hours is aware of just how bad the traffic jams are now."

Not really. The most congested area of Old Georgetown Road is to the north, between Grosvenor Lane and I-270. This stretch isn't that bad, even in rush hours. Wisconsin Avenue is far worse.

Old Georgetown Road south of McKinley Street has always been two lanes each way, and the bottleneck at the transition there isn't really that bad. Although it seems weird that they are leaving the part of Old Georgetown Road between McKinley Street and Cedar Lane as three lanes each way. Or maybe that's because there is already that very nice path along the NIH campus.

7:12: First actual report from the scene - nobody else had the official statement of the closure from the company posted in the window. First report of BWW temporary closure. #scooped Many have taken note that you reverted to using the term "MCS" the same day as the Twitter account did. You're wasting time when you still have to pick up Hans' dry cleaning and tidy up the Council office, fat boy.

"Fat boy"

I am at the recommended weight for my height. Just curious, who do you imagine I am?

Your heroes Larry Hogan and Marc Elrich are both obese. Yet I don't see you calling either of them "fat boy".

2:36: If I was bad at it, the MoCo Cartel wouldn't have had to create an Astro-Turf "Montgomery County press corps" since 2012 to try to knock me off. And you wouldn't be getting paid pizza money to troll me as part of your Astro-Turf online work for the cartel, either. Yet I'm still publishing daily, so it appears you are the ones who are "really bad at it."

12:31: If you were the recommended weight for your height, you wouldn't be in a dark room trolling local news websites 24/7.

So tell us Robert all about the COVID 19 virus.
You are the third most smart on the subject after Trump and Pence.

Our Leader tells us this isn’t serious and that it will be gone by April. I mean if he says it is hoax then that must be true be because un like Obama Trump never lies.
