Bone Jour expanding in Bethesda

Bone Jour
, a doggie daycare and pet boutique at 4922 Del Ray Avenue in downtown Bethesda, is about to double in size. It is expanding into the former Dryclean Club building directly behind it at 4923 Cordell Avenue. Workers there have been converting the interior for several months, including installing the noise reduction measures Montgomery County requires of dog training and boarding facilities.

The reception desk will flip over to the Cordell side when the work is completed. Kennels will be located in both buildings, and there will now be more daycare roaming room for each size of dog. Bone Jour has been in business since 1986.

Good. Maybe Hard Times will come back. Boy, is that a real loss for Bethesda. HT is great to meet friends, watch sports, bring the entire family for a meal with many kid-friendly items. A concept anywhere close to that, would do very well. Think Houston's or Clyde's but not as expensive.

9:05am - it's probably been over a decade since Bethesda was at peak bar, with Hard Times, two Irish pubs, Steamers, Blackfinn, Sapphire, couple of lounges, wine bar on cordell, etc.

11:10 - No one could argue with that. Spot on.

Loss of a lot of great places and gathering spots ...

I recall the following articles on the numerous restaurants in downtown Bethesda that closed in the past few years, some because of the pandemic, others to soaring lease/rent prices (many more since these were published):

"13 Montgomery County Restaurants That Have Closed in the Last Six Months"

"Twenty restaurants that closed in 2020, More than half were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic"

The loss of hard times falls solely on the owner and his lack of being able to financially manage the business

Maybe Bethesda isn't at "peak bar" but between Tommy Joe's, Caddies, Barrel & Crow, Hip Flask, and The Barking Dog there seem to be a nice variety of watering holes for every budget and taste. And it's not like Fialova, Seventh State, Corella, The Salt Line, Silver, and others don't have bars and happy hours.
