Bethesda hotel LEDs go dark (Photos)

The LED accent lighting on the facade of the Hyatt Regency Bethesda hotel has been dark in recent weeks. Installed during a major renovation of the hotel property in 2017, the light strips can change colors, and represent holidays or seasons, such as green and red around Christmas. They can also cycle through multiple colors in an animation mode. It's unclear if they have malfunctioned, or the hotel is simply seeking to lower its power bill. Similar accent lighting is employed by the neighborhood office towers of 2 Bethesda Metro Center and Avocet Tower.

If that lighting is deemed 'advertising' and it 'moves' or changes, it's technically illegal.

Allowing such opens the door to other signage, likely more third world and obnoxious. It's alrwsy happening all along many streets.

@12:56 Your statement is ridiculous.

Flashing window advertising is obnoxious a d illegal. The county needs to distinguish what's 'artful' and what's advertising. Per code, even old rotating barber poles are illegal. Most our violators have very active movement in their signage, it's obnoxious and some might say, unsafe, by any standard.

I am dismayed that the iconic Bethesda Row marquee sign has been dark for over two years. It seems odd that Federal Realty does not require the movie theater to illuminate the sign, or fix their now-playing sig near the entrance. The marquee is a real placemaking landmark in Bethesda Row.
