Maryland Democrats propose vehicle excise tax increase

Four Democratic legislators in the Maryland House of Delegates are sponsoring a bill that would increase the vehicle excise tax. If House Bill HB-167 were to pass and be signed by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D), the state's vehicle excise tax would increase from 6% to 6.75% of the fair market value of the vehicle. The higher tax rate would take effect on July 1, 2025. Delegates Lorig Charkoudian (D - Montgomery), Kris Fair (D - Frederick), Andrew C. Pruski (D - Anne Arundel), and Sheila Ruth (D - Baltimore County) are the sponsors of the House bill.

Running out of other peoples money is a bummer so time to re-up across the board. Cap all politicians salary at 50K and make them survive in the real world.

Aren't vehicle registration fees also going up, if they haven't already? (I think my renewal last year was just before the rates increased.)

Is this an annual tax, like the Personal Property Tax that Virginia has, or just an increase of the tax imposed when purchasing a car (operates like a sales tax) or when moving into the state with a car you already own?

They went up astronomically. It was $165 for 2 years for my van - and I just did it this Nov. and it was $150 for ONE year.

If the Dem Elites want to keep us off the roads in private vehicles, this is a good place to start. Next should be tolls and trying to tax gasoline more. Looks like they know what they're doing!!

Not only are they trying to raise the tax, they want to eliminate trade in tax credit potentially causing $2000-3000 more to the consumer trying to purchase a new vehicle in MD....Sad Greedy

On the purchase of a new or used car in MD, they are also pushing for the removal of the trade in tax savings.
