Downtown Bethesda water main break wiped out Tuesday night business for many restaurants (Video+Photos)

A water main valve failed last night on St. Elmo Avenue, and water was cut off to many Woodmont Triangle restaurants for the rest of the evening. One restaurant owner on Norfolk Avenue said he estimated his losses in the $1000-1500 range, and that WSSC is refusing to compensate businesses that had to close for their damages. Popular restaurants that were forced to close last night included Olazzo, Bangkok Garden, Hanaro, and Rock Bottom.

Were the repairs completed? Will those restaurants re-open tonight?

Good to hear WSSC is not going to be making any payments. WSSC is a public entity. If they start making payments every time a water main breaks, who do you think ends up paying the price? Ratepayers, that's who. There are no shareholders to recoup it from as there would be for a private company. Those cheap ass companies should have bought business insurance for exactly this sort of thing. It's a common clause on commercial insurance policies. Can't believe a corporate entity like Rock Bottom doesn't have that rider.

Now if our elected officials would only undertake meaningful oversight on WSSC maybe this problem wouldn't be occurring so often. Instead it's treated as a way to reward their friends with lifetime jobs and little oversight.
