Iconic Bethesda parking deck demolished (Photos)

Something that seems like it's always been there on Woodmont Avenue is gone. The landmark parking deck at the intersection of Woodmont and St. Elmo Avenue has been demolished. This is part of the demolition for JBG Smith's 7900 Wisconsin project, which will be anchored by Trader Joe's.

The ramp is still there
for now

The old Post Office is "iconic". The Bank of Bethesda is "iconic". Even Dunmor's is kinda-sorta "iconic", perhaps more so than Community Hardware.

WTF is "iconic" about this parking deck, you Aspie?

Anonymous said...

Seven photos. All you really need is the first one - which shows both the demolished area and the machine doing that work. Who the fuck cares about the signage?

You keep using the words "venerable" and "iconic" to describe things that are neither. I give this blog post a 78.

Why is it that all of your (very few) daytime pictures were taken right at sunrise or right at sunset? Are the rumors that you are a vampire, true?

Anonymous said...

What was iconic or landmark about the parking deck? Serious question.

Anonymous said...

@ 7:15 AM - Looks like Robbie got a haircut! Too bad he didn't iron his shirt before he did the video.

Anonymous said...

Two photos of the ramp. Apparently one was intended to show the demolished area, but that wound up in the shadow.

Honestly its an end to an era with the destruction of this garage. I remember the days in high school when you could pull up on here and look out towards the triangle. Me and my girl shared our first kiss in my car on this parking deck. If you don't consider this a historical landmark and the end of the old Bethesda, then you are not a true Bethesda resident. You will be missed dear friend, you will be missed.

Anonymous said...

Plaza construction - Chinese construction.

Anonymous said...

So far we’ve come up with a kiss by 7:27 and his girlfriend. Any other reasons for iconic or landmark status?

Rugby said...

If you've never lived in Bethesda (like "Anonymous"), then you have no idea about classic Bethesda locations. Maybe ask a longtime resident before commenting?

Rugby said...

7:17am so you're saying news only happens before 5pm? Are the rumors true that you're afraid to be outside after office hours?

Anonymous said...

a garage in Bethesda is NOT a classic location lol and yes, i grew up in Bethesda

Comments by "Rugby" on this thread at 7:50 and 7:56, on the Montgomery Mall thread at 7:53 PM, followed by "Andy Van Slyke" on the SunTrust thread at 7:59 AM.

You just tipped your hand bigly, you fool. #Oops

8:13am your default position is always that Dyer posts every comment other than yours and you are the only reader of this site.

Sounds like a nutty conspiracy theory if you ask me.

Hope you're getting paid by the comment!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the heads-up, Robert. It's good to be kept up-to-date changes like this.

Who cares if it is iconic, historic, or notable.

Anonymous said...

FakeRugby and Andy Van Slyke are no different than any other anonymous trolls.

8:37 accuses others of thinking that Dyer posts every comment other than theirs as he assumes every post other than his is by one lone person.

More of the usual pot-kettle crap.

Anonymous said...

Anyone care to explain what an aspie is? One of the worst blog posts I’ve seen from you, Robert. Iconic? Seriously? No comparison between the notable and venerable Bethesda Magazine and this poor excuse for a blog.

Anonymous said...

out of curiousity, was Robert born and raised in MOCO/Bethesda?

How come it's called "About Us", when it only mentions Robert Dyer?

"Robert Dyer is a lifelong resident of Bethesda, and CEO of Suburban News Network. He began publishing hyperlocal news about his hometown in 2006. A civic activist in Montgomery County for over a decade on issues like transportation, development and education, Robert has also been an advocate for the disabled and victims of domestic violence.

"His journalistic efforts have put a spotlight on the loss of affordable housing, infrastructure and traffic congestion, environmental brownfields, pedestrian safety, government accountability, and other topics of importance to the community.

"Suburban News Network supplies breaking news across Montgomery County through several hyperlocal news sites."

"On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog."

Anonymous said...

Why is 9:58 so interested in a competitor's employees?
Why would an anonymous commenter even care?
Who is this person who's all up in Dyer's business? Fighting Dyer's battles for him?

If you're so pro-Dyer, then you should be proud to use your real name.

Oh...
I guess you're not that pro-Dyer. after all.

Anonymous said...

Exactly.

Anonymous said...

So has the author or commenters come up with a single good reason why this parking deck might have been iconic or a landmark as described by the author?

Anonymous said...

Wait for it: "anonymous" will debate blog templates before end of day.
WordPress is a religion to him.

Anonymous said...

Why shouldn't other local writers have an "about us"?
They aren't as well known or established as Dyer.

Anonymous said...

lifelong Bethesda resident? Mr. Dyer, where did you attend High School?

Anonymous said...

"They aren't as well known or established as Dyer."

So how come they get 10-35 times as many readers as he?

"Wait for it: 'anonymous' will debate blog templates before end of day.
WordPress is a religion to him."

The usual diversion from why Dyer can't set his blog to the correct time zone, or buy a domain name.

Anonymous said...

@7:27 I agree it's iconic. I remember driving up this steep driveway was a kid (well, as a passenger) as a cut-through to Wisconsin. There was indeed a good view from up there, since there werent' many tall buildings back then.

Anonymous said...

Eyesore far from iconic. I hate Trader Joe's by the way.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they should have submitted it to the county's Historic Preservation Office, and moved the parking lot to Middleton Lane.

Anonymous said...

You can't hate Trader Joe's. They have Mango JoeJoe's. Nobody hates mango joe-joes.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to laugh my ass off when you end up being completely wrong about Trader Joe's opening in this building.

Anonymous said...

Dyer, not only was this historic edifice iconic and also a landmark, but it was also a national treasure. I and many other people around the world weep at this loss.

Anonymous said...

I LOL’d

Anonymous said...

So 10:31 are you saying it’s iconic because it was steep, it was a cut-through to Wisconsin, and the one story height was a good view back in the day because there weren’t many tall buildings back then?

Anonymous said...

That deck isn't even one story above the street.

I remember about 2 or 3 years ago a drunk lady tried driving down that grassy hillside next to the ramp. She got stuck, busted by the MoCo Cartel Po-lice, and the car was towed. LOL

Robert Dyer said...

Troll stalker on here just threatened to kill me at 12:11. Comment deleted and screen-captured for law enforcement. What an end to a day when this same Hans Riemer supporter has posted all kinds of evidence he is stalking me, doxing, using hateful language about people with disabilities as an insult to a non-disabled person in the post-R-word era.

Wow. This is the kind of person Hans Riemer has working for him, folks. Tells you all you need to know about Riemer and the MoCo cartel that they employ people like this.

Sad!

Tim said...

"Anonymous" posted threats against Dyer again here today.

Wow...just wow.

Anonymous said...

I love how Robert Dyer lies through his teeth about what deleted comments actually said.

Anonymous said...

Always have to wonder why "anonymous" thinks it is acceptable to threaten journalists like Dyer.

Tim said...

Someone obviously wants Robert Dyer to kill a story he's working on, and they're willing to threaten him.

I can't believe anyone associated with County government would be dumb enough to do this.

Maybe a developer's PR firm? These firms are known to play dirty in order to control the message around their plans.

Anonymous said...

@9:38PM: If you can't believe it, you haven't met enough county employees.

Anonymous said...

What did law enforcement say when you turned over your screenshot?

Anonymous said...

10:43 - that's true, those Joe Joe cookies are crazy good. My family calls them No No's cause we shouldn't be eating so many of them.

Anonymous said...

Other than griping about trolls, has the author contributed any further comment on how this is an iconic landmark?

Anonymous said...

4:59AM - Are you the person who mentioned on this blog how good mango joe-joes are?

I walked over that day and picked some up and that was the beginning of my addiction. No-nos...lol.
If that was you, thank you!

If not, whomever it was, thank you!

Anonymous said...

"A non-disabled person in the post-R-word era."

What does this mean, Robert?

Anonymous said...

For the record, I've been following this entire amusing thread, and nobody threatened to kill anyone. Just another conspiracy theory from the author. Sure, a lot of people mocked or criticized Dyer (what else is new?), but there wasn't any threat of violence.

I also love how Dyer assumes everyone who criticizes any of his articles works for Hans Riemer. I don't think anybody here cares about your unhealthy obsession with Hans Riemer. He probably hasn't even heard of this blog. If he did, he would probably be the one seeking legal action.

It comes as absolutely no surprise that Dyer is an ardent Trump since he behaves in exactly the same manner, or even worse.

Boyce Bowles said...

Elected officials don't usually sue journalists for covering them. I think we still have a free press last I checked. It's journalism 101 to hold Reamer accountable and to be skeptical.

Reamer has spun up enough fake blogs that praise him, so Dyer's skepticism is welcome and much needed.

And, I see the threats against Dyer posted here regularly. It does seem like someone is pressuring Dyer to kill a story he's working on.

Anonymous said...

I commend Dyer in continuing to report on our local officials and government, despite the daily threats against him.

Anonymous said...

i highly doubt anyone takes Dyer serious enough to try to kill a story. I mean Dyer is a loner cuckoo bird. Just look at his youtube videos. The dude needs to get laid and chill the f out
The fact he's approaching people in lobbies of condos and apartment buildings is crazy enough

Anonymous said...

"Reamer has spun up enough fake blogs that praise him"

#UnsignedDyer imagines that every article in Bethesda Magazine is about Hans Riemer. Dyer is such a paranoid fruitcake.

ampollin said...

wow, these comments are entertaining.
That parking lot/garage is not newsworthy. My guess is the writer is bored.
however, his attitude towards some of the commenters seems a little too much.
He posted this publically and allows comments/opinions.

Out of curiousity, where did he attend HS and College? what public service has he done for the county?

Anonymous said...

10:43 AM the BethesdaNOW blogger (RIP that blog) is the only writer I recall trespassing in Bethesda apartment buildings. He broke into several downtown to distribute flyers under every unit's front door. Not sure if he got a police citation or not.

Needless to say, residents weren't happy to come home to an ad in their front hall to a blog :/

Anonymous said...

If by "iconic" you mean, "ugly eyesore", well then, yeah.

ampollin said...

My mistake, i was reading another "article" of his about high rents in Bethesda. Mr Dyer made comments about interviewing residents of certain high end buildings and went on to assume they could or couldn't afford to live there based on their jobs

Anonymous said...

"an ad in their front hall to a blog :/"

Same atrocious Dyer syntax.

Anonymous said...

Is free press at risk in our county?

Is it normal for a journalist in MoCo to receive personal attacks and threats when holding MoCo government accountable?

ampollin said...

: Yes, occupied, but not by a rich person. We're talking about the flight of the rich here. How do I know who is in the new buildings? From being in them and talking to the new residents. Very few are on the Forbes list, folks. Hence, it's virtually impossible that they are paying the advertised rents. The tab is being picked up by corporate or government.

Anonymous said...

If Robert Dyer says "very few [residents of the new buildings] are on the Forbes list", does that mean that some of them are? Who knew Bethesda had so many billionaires!

ampollin said...

MoCo has billionaires but i highly doubt they live in condos in Bethesda

Anonymous said...

2:39 PM why not? many penthouses go for several million $ in the area.

ampollin said...

"2:39 PM why not? many penthouses go for several million $ in the area."
i assume this is Mr. Dyer. Big difference b/t millionaires and billionaires.

Anonymous said...

This year at the special Olympics they have a new event for blogging I will enter your name in Dyer make Bethesda proud!!!

Robert Dyer said...

3:12: No, that was not Mr. Dyer. I post all comments under my own name. For the record, the billionaire vs. millionaire discussion largely stems from a troll who apparently had a 3rd grade reading level, and could only read a sarcastic reference to the Forbes list as a straight factual statement.

In terms of the facts, many of the folks living in the new buildings could not afford to be there at the advertised rents. You have graduate students/universities, military/government contractors, and other forms of contract/3rd party housing going on here to fill these rental buildings.

Anonymous said...

This is Hans Reimer, and Dyer your are just a Loser pal, I want to get in on the over under on how many little boys bodies are behind Dyers creepy star wars wall paper wall #RETARD

Robert Dyer said...

3:39: Leaving this comment up so people can see for themselves that a self-proclaimed Hans Riemer supporter is still using the R-word. Shameful. Why does Mr. Riemer surround himself with people like this, instead of disavowing them?

Anonymous said...

probably b/c nobody cares about you

Anonymous said...

Robert, why is it OK for you to claim that a reader "apparently had a 3rd grade reading level", yet you get all politically-correct-outragey when someone calls you a "retard"?

Anonymous said...

Cuz he *is* a retard LOL

Anonymous said...

Saith Robert Dyer: "No, that was not Mr. Dyer."

Dyer forgot that he was signed in, and reflexively referred to himself in the third person.

Anonymous said...

That’s a really good point your potential voters would really care to know more about your position.

Anonymous said...

Hahah hello Robert. Oops.

Anonymous said...

Anybody ever watched the TV show “The Middle”?
I would imagine Dyer is a carbon copy of the character named Brick (if the character was nasty and mean). Thoughts?

Anonymous said...

Robert, would you mind being professional for a moment and stop responding to trolls and answer legitimate questions. In your professional opinion, what made this parking deck iconic and a landmark? Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Did Robert just post as himself pretending to be someone else and referring to “Mr. Dyer” in the third person?

Robert Dyer said...

6:21/4:35: No, dumbass - in the next sentence I spoke in the first person about how I always - duh! - post under my own name.

4:05: Very simple: the troll himself demonstrated a 3rd grade reading level; that's simply a fact, not an insult. Meanwhile, the r-word is no longer acceptable language in 2017, more proof that Hans Riemer and his tiny cartel faction of the MoCo Democratic Party are non-progressive dinosaurs in disguise.

It was Riemer himself who took money from the biggest lobbying entity representing health insurers against Obamacare, while tweeting that we should "pass Obamacare without the public option" (exactly what the insurers wanted and got - a total payday funded by high premiums on the lower and middle class forced to buy the plans). #FakeProgressive

Anonymous said...

Umm... Dyer... which Republicans voted for "Obamacare", let alone supported "public option"?

And in which House of Congress was Riemer when "Obamacare" was debated and passed?

Why do you keep digressing further? Just admit that your use of the terms "idiot...moron...3rd grade reading level" is no different than "retard"?

Robert Dyer said...

9:42: Any knowledgeable person knew that the public option was required to avoid the now-transpiring collapse of Obamacare; it was the only way to force private insurers to keep premiums affordable.

Riemer was in the House of Twitter when he tweeted in 2009 to "pass Obamacare without the public option." He may be a Manchurian Candidate for Congress when Jamie Raskin retires. At least that would finally answer why so much of his campaign funding comes from out-of-state and Wall Street/K Street in particular.

Big difference: idiot, moron, and factual measurement of reading level are still acceptable discourse; the r-word is not.

Anonymous said...

"Riemer was in the House of Twitter"

Da fuq does this mean?

Anonymous said...

Any "collapse of Obamacare" is due to the Trump administration's constant attempts to pressure Congress to repeal, and unconstitutionally blocking the subsidies and impeding the open enrollment period.

Again I will ask you - which Republicans supported "public option"?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone ever figure out why the author thinks the parking deck was iconic? What made it a landmark?

ampollin said...

he apparently won't address your question but instead is going off on crazy tangents.
I'm still curios as to why he won't say where he went to HS or college?

Anonymous said...

"Do you support in-state tuition to illegal immigrants?"

Robert Dyer: "No. But these questions do not address the whole issue. It’s popular right now to blame illegal immigrants for everything and I’m not going to participate in that. I would rather address the variety of challenges before us."

Anonymous said...

That's funny, there were 9 more comments last time I was here.

I remember Gifford's said...

11:17 AM grilling a journalist about where he went to high school sounds like a crazy tangent to me. why not just reach out to Robert directly if you have so many personal questions? It's not relevant to this news report.

Anonymous said...

Isn’t asking him a question in his blog reaching out to him directly?

You saying Robert always stays on topic and relevant in his posts?

Anonymous said...

Ok. Staying on topic. So what makes this iconic or landmark? No answer...

Robert Dyer said...

12:27: It is a landmark because it was at a major crossroads downtown for decades, much like the Peripoint Building or the bank at Old Georgetown and Wisconsin. It doesn't mean it was architecturally outstanding, but it was iconic and a landmark to those who are not carpetbaggers.

Anonymous said...

I've never heard of a former political candidate who deletes his bio, hides his education, and guards his age like Ft Knox guards gold.
Why?

This is weird behavior.

Anonymous said...

Grilling = asking a question?

Dyer is above questioning?

Robert Dyer said...

5:11: Only an idiot posts details about his DOB, birthplace, schools attended etc. online for cybercrooks to utilize. Obviously, as a Riemer supporter, you still think Windows 2000 is a secure platform. LOL

5:20: Are the other reporters above questioning? You don't seem to ask them these bizarro questions.

Anonymous said...

Again, your editing sucks, you don’t credit other sites when you use their content, you write with shameful bias - you are more of a hobby blogger than journalist.

Anonymous said...

I'm not a Riemer supporter.

Quit trying to read a deeper meaning into asking why you delete your educational background?

Quit trying to distract by inserting topics that weren't asked about, like DOB, birthplace.

Quit trying to insult me by attempting some bizarre connection between me wondering why you delete your education and Windows 2000.

As far as others, I've never known of a reporter to delete comments that mention where they graduated from.

What is so outrageous of asking someone where they went to school?

Why you you villainize someone for that?

Robert Dyer said...

It turns out George Leventhal does it, too! He's secretly been attending the University of Maryland for a PhD using his political power and taxpayer-funded salary to build his resume up. He never talked about this publicly, even while claiming he deserved a $137000 salary because the Council was supposedly a "full-time job."

Anonymous said...

He's not DELETING every mention of it.

If I worked for a company that insisted on knowing how I spend my salary?
Well, I wouldn't. I don't live in North Korea.

Anonymous said...

why do you compare yourself to real journalists and politicians? they don't stay up all night making youtube videos of hungryman dinners

Anonymous said...

It's that schizo multiple personality thing in those videos that's frightening.

Anonymous said...

I thought you said you were different from other journalists?

Anonymous said...

Thank you 4:40am for finally answering the many questions.

So anything that has been at a major crossroads downtown for decades equals landmark! Good to know.

And the non-architecturally outstanding landmark makes it iconic to someone who is not a carpetbagger. How does that connect? Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Some people can't distinguish between something being *personally* iconic, *locally* iconic, and *universally* iconic.

The window screen that I'd/we'd remove to sneak out of the house in my youth is iconic only to me and my buddies. The picture of me crawling out on my stomach into the red-clay mud gets the adults laughing every time. The kids? Only an eye-roll.

Anonymous said...

Must be nice, huh? Jealous much, Dyer? You should be because you’ll never be on the Council. Instead you can fabricate little conspiracy theories.

Anonymous said...

Tim is joking right? He doesn’t really believe any of what he just wrote??
