Safeway issues "storm alert," crews treat roads ahead of Bethesda snowstorm

The first winter storm of 2019 is about thirty hours away, and preparations have been a mixed-bag, particularly as forecasters scale back the expected accumulation numbers for the D.C. area. Some Safeway stores in the county have posted signs outside declaring a "Storm Alert," exhorting customers to "Be Prepared! Stock up on supplies today!" But there was no apparent rush on supermarkets as of last night. The Safeway store at the Shops at Sumner Place in Bethesda was fully stocked with milk, bread and paper goods inside, and snow shovels and firewood outside. Other grocery stores visited last night were equally well-stocked.

Montgomery County's Department of Transportation was a bit more busy. Trucks were pretreating roads from Bethesda to Burtonsville Thursday night into Friday morning.

STORM CENTER

Winter Storm Gia is expected to hit Montgomery County around 2:00 PM tomorrow. Temperatures should be just above freezing at that time, but will drop below 32 degrees over the next few hours after that. Expect a snow accumulation of around 2 inches by Sunday night. Low temperatures will make for dangerous travel conditions.

Why do people freak out over 1-3" of snow?

I may build a snowman at the corner of Fairmont and Woodmont, but during the day like normal people. Bob, can you help?

Basement blogger Robert Dyer slips a little deeper into lunacy on his Rockville blog:

"Are you with the MoCo cartel Stasi?"

"The MoCo cartel is literally running the County as a Communist dictatorship - complete with Soviet-style "elections" and Pravda-clone Washington Post house organ."

Robert Dyer said...

5:44: Totally factual statement. I stand by it. If you disagree, you are either not informed or part of the cartel yourself. No debates, no coverage of the Council races throughout the entire general election, anomalous voting results at polling places, etc. etc.

Let's see what lovefest Montgomery County government coverage MoCo cartel PR aide, er, reporter Jennifer Barrios has for us in the Post today.

Jennifer Barrios has a Master's in Journalism.
Her most recent columns?
"Men should discuss prostate cancer screenings with their doctors, experts say"
"Md. Senate President Mike Miller has metastasized prostate cancer, faces chemo"

The envy emanated off your comment. Like a cloud of vapor.

The Post had zero coverage of county elections, other than daily pro Floreen fluff.

Usually elections are seen as important.

Anna said...

6:37AM A quick search of WaPo reveals that zeroisn't true. I'll agree it's light coverage; it generally is since this county is so heavily Democratic.

This is a difficult area for local news, with the Federal govt taking priority.
But this area really isn't like other areas, making it hard to compare.

The MoCo GOP...

Ran perennial loser Robin Ficker for County Executive.

Ran no candidates for Council Districts 3, 4, and 5.

Did not have contested primaries for the 4 At-Large seats or for District 1.

Nearly all of their Council candidates were perennial losers like Robin Ficker, who didn't even bother to campaign.

So of course the general election was anticlimactic.

7:16am sounds like Russia.

"Yes, others are running, but we know Putin will win, so..."

Would kind of be nice to profile candidates before we vote, right?

A lot of coverage of long shot executive candidate Floreen, who lost in a landslide.

6:21 AM - Trump U. doesn't offer any journalism classes.

Anonymous said...

Floreen received 11,000 more votes than Ficker.

Bobby do you know how ridiculous you look with that umbrella in a spring rain shot? You sure ain't a meteorologist or have a storm center, chicken little.

Terp Grad said...

Dyer has great WX coverage!

Anna said...

7:38AM - that quick search of WaPo, again proves you wrong. You're sure fixated on Ms Floreen.

8:07am please point me to any Post article about the at large council race after the primary (which was a circus with dozens of candidates). Thanks!

Anna said...

8:21AM - That has nothing to do with what I "said."
You've completed Step 1: Accuse someone of something they haven't said.
Let me be the first to hand you that

Next up? Step 2 make them sound unreasonable,

Followed by Step 3: Attack them for having the nerve (the nerve!) to say anything in the first place.

9:54 am ok, so we agree there was no coverage of the at large general election race, even though there were several open seats.

Based on no general election coverage of Council races, I can't give an attaboy to the Post at this time.

@ 10:24 AM - Can you at least try typing an original thought?

Anonymous said...

10:26am it's a big deal for our democracy if voters are denied information on critical local elections. This also includes holding zero council debates in the general election, even with a full slate of candidates.

Anna said...

10:24AM - No we did not agree "there was no coverage of the at large general election race."
Again, not what I posted.

I see you're still on Step 1.

The STORM CENTER will be surprised when we see an accumulation of at least six inches in Bethesda.

5:53/6:37/7:38/8:21/10:24/11:31 AM:

There were a total of 63 candidates - Democratic, Republican, Green - who ran for the 9 County Council seats.

"Suburban News Network" covered exactly 2 of those 63 candidates - 3% - Robert Dyer and Hans Riemer.

Dyer needs to practice what he preaches.

3:06pm you try to deflect everything back to whatever grievance you have with Robert Dyer

The point is that it's unprecedented to not cover contested county races and for folks to refuse to debate.

Saith Robert Dyer: "Are you with the MoCo cartel Stasi?"

"The MoCo cartel is literally running the County as a Communist dictatorship - complete with Soviet-style "elections" and Pravda-clone Washington Post house organ."

Looks like Dyer has unprecedented grievances with our elected officials.

3:11PM I see you're moving on to Step 2!
Not with me (I was done for the day) but you picked right up with the reader commenting @3:06.

Step 2 make them sound unreasonable

Things go sideways for all y'all sheepshills when you start assigning "motivations" to others.
