Amazon Books closes for renovations at Bethesda Row

Amazon Books has temporarily closed for renovations at Bethesda Row. The store will reopen November 2, 2019. A sign in the now-covered windows refers to the renovations as "upgrades." Why renovations are needed when the store only opened last year is unclear.

Probably going to test out a new retail concept. My guess is they will add a dedicated area for Amazon.com returns, since those are becoming popular.

So far the store seems to be popular. Obviously not as large or comfortable as B&N, but still nice to have in downtown. As we move away from a brick and motor economy, it only makes sense that e-retailers will need to step up and have at least some presence in the physical market. Their return policy for any Amazon.com product is really very handy to have. Just drop them off at the desk.

I imagine these prototype stores will be tweaked over time, as they test new technology and merchandising. It doesn’t seem like they need a whole wall cabinet filled with various models of Romba’s for example. I do wish they had a few comfortable chairs or benches.

Possibly they'll introduce the "just walk out with it, and we'll charge it to your credit card" model they've been testing (mostly for food?) elsewhere.

The Georgetown store is also closed.

Curiouser and curiouser...

(Thanks, P.o.P.)
