Here's the latest look at the Maizon Bethesda apartments at 4900 Moorland Lane, along Arlington Road, in downtown Bethesda. They expect to begin leasing this spring.

Holy lack of setback Batman!!!

Why did they choose two different colors of brick? And why did they choose such an ugly yellowish one at all?

@9:43 PM: I actually like the different shades of brick. Keeps it from looking monolithic down the block. The main issue I see is the lack of setback from the street, combined with the exhaust fumes and noise for any resident that keeps their windows open along Arlington Road.

Actually they are using four different colors of brick, intended to reduce the scale of this very long building. I agree that the yellow ochre colored brick looks bad. A lot like an old elementary school.

Such a low building for being so close to Metro.

Would the Edgemoor residents block something higher?

Like most of Bethesda, as sites get further from the center of downtown, the allowable height steps down to be more in scale with neighboring properties. Lots of single family homes are just west of the library and Bethesda Elementary. I think the scale seems appropriate at this location. The fact that downtown is sort of hourglass shaped does make this a tricky site for really tall buildings. I would expect more of this type of mid-rise density directly west of the Brody as well.

@8:58

Why would they setback a 6-story building?

@9:43

So it looks like two separate buildings and not one block-long monolith

It makes sense since across the street is residential zoned. Also I think this site was originally supposed to be zoned lower, but the property owner asked for extra height as part of the sector plan process. If anything the new 15 story Edge building on the other side of the block next to Metro should be much taller.
