Most of the hype over commercial plant-based dining has been around fast food restaurants in recent years, like the Impossible Whopper and forthcoming McDonald's PLT. Now, attention is turning to more upscale, casual plant-based dining concepts. One of the emerging brands in that category is PLANTA, which has announced it will open a restaurant at Bethesda Row this summer.
PLANTA's menu favors plant-based twists on popular Asian cuisines, like sushi, dumplings, bao and poke bowls. Dishes popular at PLANTA's six existing locations that will be on the Bethesda menu include Ahi Watermelon Nigiri, Cauliflower Tots, Bang Bang Broccoli, Frenchie and Shroomami Pizzas, the PLANTA Burger and Kelp Caesar Salad. Executive Chef David Lee will also concoct several new dishes exclusive to the Bethesda Row location, which he intends to be locally-inspired.
The Alden-Fenwick-designed interior will seat 140 in a modern setting. 50 more diners will enjoy al fresco dining outside, and a semi-private area will host events for parties up to 18. Of course, given recent events, takeout will a major focus, as well. PLANTA will be located at 4910 Elm Street, in the space vacated by Cafe Deluxe last year.
“Bethesda Row has long served as a launching point for first-to-market concepts. We’re proud to continue this tradition with PLANTA”, Federal Realty Senior Vice-President Stuart Biel said in a statement. “In addition to the unique menu offerings, the PLANTA team has a high design aesthetic for beautifully curated dining atmospheres that will be a welcomed addition to the Bethesda Row restaurant scene.”

I love seeing new places open in Bethesda! Good luck Planta!
A few more places along Bethesda Row like Hawkers and there could actually be a nightlife in Bethesda again.
