Levain Bakery is now open as of this hour at 4844 Bethesda Avenue at Bethesda Row. The windows were uncovered last night, allowing a sneak peek at the finished interior of the bakery. Expect long lines today, but also cookies that should be worth the wait.

That "Sorry, No Pets" sign says "New York Health Department". Can you put in a word for them to update that?
I hate to say it but this was a bit of a let down! I was so so excited to try out this bakery because of all the hype it gets. I came around 2 pm on Wednesday and had to wait no more than 5 minutes in line to order. The staff at the door was very friendly, and chatty. I got the classic- chocolate chip walnut cookie, the double chocolate chocolate chip, and the oatmeal raisin cookies. I also got the lemon loaf. The staff was very efficient at moving the line along. I will admit I didn't immediately eat my cookie...I had a small bite a few minutes after purchasing it, and it was good but not lifechanging. I ate the rest on a car ride and it was fine...nothing to rave about. It by no means was a bad cookie, but I was disappointed because I was expecting the best cookie in the world and got a pretty standard cookie, with way too much sugar, in my opinion. Apart from its size and gooey center, it didn't taste that special. I hate to say it, but this wasn't my favorite treat I had in the dessert area.
