Haagen-Dazs to close at Bethesda Row

Haagen-Dazs
, one of the longest-running businesses in the Bethesda Row area, will be serving its final scoops over the next week. The ice cream shop will close on August 1, 2021, leaving Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams and Dolcezza as ice cream lovers' choices at Bethesda Row. Haagen-Dazs has a second Bethesda location at Montgomery Mall. Its Bethesda Row space will be filled by Chaia Tacos, a small local vegetarian taco chain with locations in Georgetown and Chinatown.

That swap sets up a Woodmont Avenue taco cage match among Chaia, existing Bethesda Row tenant Fish Taco, New York City's "absolute best taco" purveyor Tacombi (coming soon to 4749 Bethesda Avenue at Woodmont), and Mexicue (coming soon to 4733 Elm Street at Woodmont). All will be in a one-block stretch of Woodmont. As Caitlyn Jenner used to say as a spokesperson for Tropicana orange juice, "only one can be the best."

While the ice cream at Haagen-Dazs is certainly sold at what I like to call, "boardwalk prices," it will be missed. Here's a look back at a $5.25 1-scoop cone in 2011!

Another Taco place on Woodmont? Seriously? Fish Taco opening I understand. Tacombi opening I understand like a Burger King opening near a McDonald's. Mexicue opening is harder to understand given Fish Taco and Tacombi..... and as for Chaia: I can't for the life of me understand why Chaia's owners/investors felt that opening within one block of three other taco places makes sense.

Call it "Taco Row" at this point.

York Castle can't open a Bethesda location soon enough.

Looks like their lease is up if this location opened in 2011. Can't blame them for not renewing with the ongoing construction directly in front, unknown reopening of the cinema, and about 6 other dessert concepts within a 1 block radius(yogurt, cookie, cupcake, gelato, ice cream, thai ice cream)
