Surveillance camera robot removed from Bethesda park again

The surveillance camera robot in Veterans Park in downtown Bethesda has been removed again. It was previously stationed there from June 1 to August 4, and from August 26 until yesterday. Montgomery County had also recently deployed a second mobile camera unit on nearby Cordell Avenue. If the park camera has been redeployed elsewhere, I haven't run across it yet.

Squishable reopens at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Squishable
has reopened at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The store closed at the beginning of August, and the mall posted a sign indicating that a new retailer would soon fill the space. But the Squishables just wouldn't vacate the premises! Nothing was moved. Nothing changed.

About two weeks later, the sign was reinstalled above the storefront. The windows remained covered. Now the store has reopened, without any explanation for what happened. So I'm filing this under the category of "weird" once again. Look for Squishable on Level 1 of the mall, between Bath & Body Works and Mango.

Everett Hall opening downtown Bethesda store

Everett Hall
, a legendary name in menswear in Washington, D.C., and around the world, is coming to downtown Bethesda. It will be located at 7706 Woodmont Avenue, in the ground floor of the Lionsgate condominiums. If an Everett Hall suit was good enough for Nelson Mandela, it's probably good enough for you. Everett Hall has had a longtime location at Chevy Chase Pavilion. Get ready to dress for success with Everett Hall in Bethesda.

No "Megalopolis: The Ultimate Experience" IMAX showings in Montgomery County so far this weekend

Montgomery County didn't make the cut for "Megalopolis: The Ultimate Experience" in IMAX theaters this opening weekend. Neither of the IMAX cineplexes in the County - AMC Dine-in Rio Cinemas 18 in Gaithersburg and Regal Majestic in Silver Spring - will feature the "Live Participant" who will interact with Adam Driver's Cesar Catalina character during the film's most-publicized scene. AMC Tysons Corner 16 is the only theater in the D.C. region offering "The Ultimate Experience" this weekend, according to IndieWire, and a review of local movie listings.

It's surprising, given that Montgomery County has one of the highest-educated populaces in the nation. By comparison, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, and Denver have more than one location offering "The Ultimate Experience." Providing a live performer to enact the scene was always expected to be a major challenge when the film went to nationwide distribution, but IndieWire reports that additional theaters could be added as time goes on. If they are, confirmation will be offered at the time of ticket purchase by the label "The Ultimate Experience" on the particular screening time.

How long "Megalopolis" will play in theaters remains to be seen. Many reviews so far suggest the major messages of the film have gone over most critics' heads. It's likely to be a movie that will be reassessed much more positively in a decade or two.

Signage installed at Kapow Buddy at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Signage has been installed at Kapow Buddy Thai Street Bowl at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The signs have been placed on the mall exterior, as well as outside the fast casual restaurant's space indoors. In recent weeks, the restaurant has been serving its bowls at various events and venues to obtain feedback, which has been quite positive from the reactions shown on their social media accounts. When it opens, look for Kapow Buddy Thai Street Bowl on Level 1 of the mall, diagonally across from Yogi Castle in the Old Navy wing.

Sneak peek: Mussel Bar & Grille in Bethesda (Photos)

Time for a sneak peek inside Mussel Bar & Grille, opening soon at 4903 Cordell Avenue in Bethesda. Here is our first look at the interior of the restaurant, returning for a second run in downtown Bethesda, after closing its Bethesda Row location in April 2022. Chef-owner Robert Wiedmaier will be laser-focused on Mussel Bar, as his two most-prominent D.C.-area restaurants, Marcel's and Brasserie Beck, have closed earlier this year. No signage or opening date yet, but it looks like a grand opening is pretty close.

Foot Locker chooses Florida over Montgomery County, Maryland for new corporate HQ

Montgomery County and the State of Maryland turned out to be flyover country for Foot Locker. CEO Mary Dillon announced that the sporting goods giant, currently located in New York City, has chosen St. Petersburg, Florida as the new location for its global corporate headquarters. This officially gives St. Petersburg more Fortune 500 headquarters than Montgomery County, while its population is barely a third of MoCo's. Foot Locker plans to make the move late next year, bringing 175 high-wage jobs to St. Petersburg.

Foot Locker is only the latest company to sail over Montgomery County and Maryland like Michael Jordan on its way to the basket. Montgomery County hasn't attracted a major corporate headquarters in over a quarter-century. It's just one reason why the County, like Maryland, has a moribund economy and structural budget deficit. Once again, we've been dunked on by a more business-friendly jurisdiction, and the losses are adding up on residents' annually-rising tax bills.

"Foot Locker's move represents a significant corporate relocation, and importantly, it's another example of impactful and inclusive economic development in our city and the Tampa Bay region," St. Petersburg Mayor Kenneth T. Welch said in a statement. "On the heels of the generational Historic Gas Plant District project approval, St. Pete has now attracted a Fortune 500 company that will create 150+ more jobs and further diversify our workforce."

"We are delighted to welcome Foot Locker, Inc. to Pinellas County," Pinellas County Economic Development Director Dr. Cynthia Johnson said. "The Fortune 500 company’s decision to relocate here is a testament to Pinellas County’s attractiveness as a business destination. Pinellas County is committed to supporting the company’s growth and ensuring it thrives in the community.”

J.Crew reopens at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

J.Crew
has reopened at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. It has moved across the corridor to a new location. The return of J.Crew is slightly behind schedule, as the store was officially expected to reopen this past summer. Look for J.Crew's new spot on Level 1 of the mall, between Intimissimi and Arhaus.

Pitango Gelato closes in Bethesda

Pitango Gelato
has closed at 4901-A Fairmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda. Signage has been stripped from the building, and seating, equipment and menu boards have been removed from the interior. A sign posted outside states that the store's lease has ended. Pitango opened here in May 2020 - what a challenging period to have opened, when you think what was happening at the time.

Subway to open at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Subway
is coming to Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The famous sandwich chain has leased the former J. Chow space in the Dining Terrace food court. After a number of independent or local tenants have flopped spectacularly in the food court in recent times, it appears Westfield is going to try a "sure thing" with a popular national brand, just as McDonald's and Chick-fil-A continue to enjoy tremendous success at the mall year after year.

Construction of the new Subway is expected to begin in a few weeks. I think this will be a great addition to the food court. Especially with the recent improvements and additions to the Subway menu. We'll know inflation is officially over when the $5 Footlong returns to Subway.

Rash of commercial burglaries in Friendship Heights

A series of commercial burglaries unfolded over two nights in the Friendship Heights area of Chevy Chase earlier this month, Montgomery County police report. One suspect was arrested, but the others remain at large. In the early morning hours of September 10, 2024, burglars broke into Saks Fifth Avenue and T-Mobile, and attempted to break into GAP. Early the next morning, one or more burglars broke into Bloomingdales

It must be noted that the burglaries occurred around the same time that looting took place at multiple businesses in Northwest Washington, D.C., following a Metropolitan Police Department officer-involved shooting in that jurisdiction. But none of the media accounts I have seen so far included the Friendship Heights incidents on our side of the border as being related.

Merchandise was taken from all three of the burglarized businesses. Officers responding to the scene found evidence of forced entry at all three. Mandel Greene, 27, of Washington, D.C. was arrested in connection with the Saks Fifth Avenue burglary. He has been charged with felony 2nd-degree burglary, and felony theft. Greene posted bond and was released the next day, according to Maryland court records.

A preliminary hearing in the Saks case has been scheduled for October 4 in Montgomery County District Court in Rockville. Suspects in the T-Mobile burglary are described only as two Black males, and the unsuccessful GAP burglars are described simply as one Black male, and one of unknown description. If you have any information to assist police in tracking down any of the suspects, call (301) 279-8000.

Sneak peek: Interior design of new Burke & Herbert Bank in Bethesda

Burke & Herbert Bank
won't just be moving furniture into the space it just leased at 7809 Woodmont Avenue for its new Bethesda loan production office. Here is a preview of the planned interior remodeling, as rendered by DEI Design Build. The space was already configured for a bank use by former tenant EagleBank, but Burke & Herbert will be customizing it with a new modern look. There will also be a revised floorplan.

Montgomery County fumbles biotech HQ, Philadelphia recovers for touchdown

Butterfingers!
Biotech, along with residential housing construction, is really the only bright spot in Montgomery County's otherwise-moribund economy. Decisions - and hefty tax breaks, which coincidentally only apply to these two industries (wow, you mean tax breaks generate economic growth?) - made by County and Maryland leaders decades ago led to the development of a strong biotech sector. But even this couldn't prevent MoCo officials' latest fumble of a corporate headquarters, as the relocation search of Adare Pharma Solutions' global headquarters ended with the selection of...Philadelphia.

The New Jersey-based biotech firm made its decision last month, but the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development celebrated the victory at a ceremony on Friday. “Having a company like Adare relocate its global headquarters to Philadelphia is a fantastic win for our Commonwealth and proves Pennsylvania gets it done,” DCED Secretary Rick Siger said. “The company’s growth is helping to boost our already robust life sciences sector ― a key element of our economic development strategy — while creating more opportunities for Pennsylvanians.”

Steering the Keystone state's successful bid was the Governor's Action Team. “I’m competitive as hell and I believe Pennsylvania is the best state in the nation for companies who want to innovate, grow, and succeed so I’m thrilled that Adare has chosen Pennsylvania over other states for its headquarters and continued growth,” Governor Josh Shapiro said in a statement. “Pennsylvania is a leader in biotech and life sciences – with a talented workforce, access to key markets, and significant laboratory infrastructure – and Adare’s growth here will build on that legacy while creating more opportunity for Pennsylvanians. Pennsylvania is open for business, and I look forward to welcoming more companies to our Commonwealth in the near future.”

Adare's new global HQ will bring "at least 115 new, well-paying jobs" to Pennsylvania, the governor's statement indicated. Meanwhile, on the day that Philadelphia was celebrating the Adare HQ prize, the Montgomery County Council was tweeting about placing even more costly environmental regulations and paperwork responsibilities on building owners in the County. "Doh!" Now there's a great recruiting message to send to firms around the world. Montgomery County continues to be closed for business.

International snacks at Avenue Cafe in Bethesda

Packaged snacks from around the world are available at Avenue Cafe at 4924-A Del Ray Avenue in downtown Bethesda. Many of the packages and logos will look familiar to American snackers, but the flavors are rarely ones made available for domestic sale in the United States. For example, the cafe sells Frito-Lay's Pringles competitor STAX, but in a Spicy Lobster flavor.

Avenue Cafe is one of the few businesses open very late (2:00 AM, 3:00 AM Fridays & Saturdays) in Bethesda, following the Montgomery County Council's disastrous "nighttime economy" initiative that ended up tanking the nighttime economy. Making it the perfect place to pick up an unusual late night snack. The cafe also serves fresh food, and has a hookah lounge.
