Armed carjacking in broad daylight in Bethesda

Montgomery County police responded to a report of an armed carjacking in downtown Bethesda Sunday afternoon, January 12, 2025. The carjacking was reported in a parking lot in the 4700 block of Miller Avenue at 4:40 PM Sunday. @CordellTraffic on Twitter reported that the vehicle stolen was a Chevrolet Camaro. @MoCoMag on Twitter reported that the Black male suspect was wielding an Uzi and wearing a ski mask, and that the Camaro stolen was black.

Police have not released any further description of the suspect, or the model year of the Camaro, as of this writing. If you can identify the suspect, or have any other information about this incident, call police at (301) 279-8000.

The lookout for the suspect was updated to include information about the weapon displayed, either a handgun with an extended magazine or, "possibly an Uzi." Take that latter with a grain of salt, given the victim was probably concentrating his attention on the business-end of the firearm, which, in the moment --I can attest from personal experience-- takes on the dimensions of a Howitzer.

Concealed carry and practice, practice, practice. The police are there to protect and serve but even in downtown Bethesda, cannot get there faster than you can draw to protect yourself if ever needed. There's also Byrna which are widely popular, Made in USA, non-thethal weapons that are legal to carry anywhere in the USA without permit. You can even carry in a place that has a no gun sign outside because it's technically not a gun. This is getting bad again it seems like. Where in the world is the new police chief on this stuff? Playing backgammon with Marc Elrich more than likely.

I was at Panera out on the veranda looking in the direction of the burrito truck right about that time and didn't even see it... I'm sure the Apple Store MoCo popo "presence" right up the street didn't see a thing either.

Defund, de moralize the police. Retirements are up and recruitment is dangerously low and that's a fact.

@10:14, that's a safe bet, unless MCPD could see through buildings more than a quarter mile away as they sat on Bethesda Avenue, across the street from the Apple Store.

Is Apple or Nike paying for their added and devoted MC Police surveillance? What was the deal with DC police before Nike moved out of Georgetown because of crime? Things should be better for both now that they're on the Red and soon(?) our wonderfully inviting Purple line?

What does PG County do to thwart these kind of crimes? Gotta be more than just send them over here.

We are infringed.

Not to mention that it's very likely the quality of new officers is likely to diminish as the 'returns' and morale continue to deteriorate. We are naive to think we can separate ourselves from the degradation literally all around us. We just don't have the mettle or backbone.

Your equating crime and transit is so hilarious, and mindless. Stop, for a second, and think about the event. You come to the target area, commit a violent/non-violent crime, run/walk back to the transit source, and wait...wait...wait, for your ride away from the scene. NOT HAPPENING!

A couple of points:

@11:21, when you see an occupied police cruiser camped for hours in front of the Apple [or other] store, that's an off-duty officer working a second job, having contracted with the store to provide high-visibility presence and act as a crime deterrent. Police who participate in the county's take-home cruiser program get to use their police car while off the clock, but in return are required to have their radios on at all times, and to respond to any code-3 calls that are broadcast proximal where they are --a rape, an armed carjacking, etc. sometime in 2024 there was a late night armed robbery on Persimmon Tree Road, where a gunman confronted a homeowner who had just gotten back to his place. Police were on the scene in literally less than one minute after the call was broadcast because they were working off-the-clock security less than a block away.

@7:20 -- it may seem counter-intuitive, but crooks do make use of the subway with such regularity that it is almost standard procedure for [at least the Bethesda district] police to dispatch an officer to the Metro station as soon as PD has suspect description. A few months ago, a trio of males committed an armed robbery at Arlington Road and Bethesda Ave, then fled to the Red line, where they just escaped being caught by MCPD, who were still gathering descriptions of the assailants from the victim.

7:20, so you think our guest perps drive here and park in our lots? Do they jump out if cars? Hundreds of crimes have been solved with Metro CC videos, coming and going.

7:20 you need to get out more.
