Bethesda Row Giant posts message on egg prices, availability

The Bethesda Row Giant at 7142 Arlington Road has posted a message regarding the impact of avian influenza, a.k.a. bird flu, on the shelves of the egg section at the store. This message states, "You may notice a variance in price and availability of eggs at this time due to recent Avian Influenza outbreaks." Elevated prices were certainly evident across the shelves. However, there was no shortage of eggs at the time of my visit - there were plenty of eggs available to purchase.

Wow. $8.39 for a dozen eggs. Trumpflation is only going to get worse.

So you.. you mean... all those promises of cheaper eggs were... were... oh, no, could it be... were lies?
Heavens!

Avian flu is the cause of this, not overall inflation.

11:24/4:32 I realize economics isn't your strong suit, but man, you don't need to prove ignorance every single day.

Huh? Inflation always has a cause. Pointing out the cause doesn't mean inflation no longer exists. Avian flu, threats of tariffs, etc. have cumulatively added up to a spike in inflation at the start of Trump's term, eggs and otherwise.

Giant Westbard is selling 1/2 doz. containers of eggs.

Well of course but the sarcastic comments were directed at Trump who blamed Biden for cost of groceries during the campaign this fall and he promised repeatedly that on day one he would lower prices.

Don't blame Trump for this. He's been busy ending the war in Ukraine on his first day in office, and deporting 10 million illegal immigrants at a rate of 600/day last week (down from 800/day the previous week).

45 years from now (based on the current deportation rate) once those 10 million immigrants are deported, and he'll go back to focusing on grocery prices.

Maybe we can inject the birds with bleach? Or y'know strong light inside the chicken body? Can we try something like that?
I'm sure Trump will come up with some fix bc he cares so much for us non-billionaires.

I am seeing a few grocery prices coming down. A sale on one line of TV dinners for $1 each last week - haven't seen that for several years. I am still waiting for prices to come down across the board, however.

America is finally being run like a business: a business acquired by private equity that’s being stripped for parts before being liquidated.

Your example is referred to as a "loss leader". Loss leaders are used to get customers in to buy whatever. Prices aren't coming down.

10:53: I agree, as I wrote, that we haven't seen across-the-board cuts. However, there were no loss-leaders in frozen dinners for several years, so it's a data point I take note of.

No one seriously expects that inflation would be solved in 26 days. No legislation has even been passed, and any relevant executive orders (i.e. lowering energy/fuel costs via increasing supply) will take time to have any effect. I'm not aware of any executive order that directly targets grocery prices so far.

Hey, were just going on Trump’s bs lie that he would take care of it on day 1. But he’s too busy doing important stuff like gutting the FBI, CIA, threatening vital allies with tariffs that will only punish American’s, renaming the Gulf of Mexico, blah, blah, blah. He’s just enacting Project 2025 and turning every American’s SSN and healthcare information over to Elon Musk and his minions. What could possibly go wrong there. Who’s he going to sell it to?
