Montgomery County police corral 5 shoplifters in "retail blitz" at Bethesda Safeway

Montgomery County police officers conducted a "retail blitz" at the Safeway store at 5000 Bradley Boulevard in downtown Bethesda last Thursday, March 20, 2025. Over the course of just one afternoon, they were able to catch five shoplifters in action. At 12:30 PM, police say, a man and woman entered the store. The man took items and the two left without paying. Officers stopped them, and both gave false identities.

The man was found to have items belonging to the Safeway on his person, and officers determined that the woman was in conspiracy with him to steal from the store. Police also found he was in possession of drug paraphernalia. They were eventually able to identify the two suspects as Shelon Emmanel Johnson, 34, of no fixed address, and Dequita LaShawn Jones, age not given, of Gaithersburg.

Johnson and Jones were taken into custody and transported to the County jail. Johnson was charged with theft $100 to under $1,500, possession of drug paraphernalia, false statement to peace officer and obstructing and hindering. Jones was charged with conspiracy to commit theft $100 to under $1,500 and released on her own recognizance.

About a 90 minutes later, Daniel Mossing Troen of Kensington, entered the store. Police did not provide his age, either. Officers observed Troen allegedly taking items, and leaving without paying. They issued Troen a trespass notice, and a criminal citation for theft less than $100. Troen was released after signing both documents.

Less than an hour later, 39-year-old James Baker, 39, and 19-year-old Kristchelle Aniya Wedge, 19, both of Washington, D.C., entered the Safeway and also proceeded to shoplift items and flee. Baker and Wedge were pursued to the Bethesda Metro station, where they were initially arrested. But they were ultimately issued trespass notices and criminal citations, and were released from custody.

Imagine what's it like when the Po-po aren't around! Incessant and increasing.

Ditto JAC and Anon! I shop there often -- gotta keep my eyes open!

It's great news that police don't have anything more important to do that deal with petty theft. Glad that Kia/Hyundai crap is mostly past us.

I just search on the guy from Kensington. He was arrested out in Oregon for shoplifting. https://www.pressherald.com/2020/04/09/scarborough-police-beat-march-30-april-5/

All that merely to be released to their own recognizance only to return to the store tomorrow!

Drifters and frequent movers are very disturbing because you know they didn't move here for traditional "work."

Thank you MoCo PD- the riff raff have arrived in Bethesda

Tho it's easy to sit in the cool of the evening and question what better men do in the heat of day, citing these miscreants without real penalty just invites more, if not the same person doing it again. If we don't start getting serious with enforcing firm punishment it's going to get exponentially worse particularly with the Purple line and crime magnet establishments moving here. Are we naive enough to think Bethesda can escape the realities even as close as PG County, much less DC?

Metro tourism season officially began.

That Safeway is particularly vulnerable to shoplifting since the exit has no store personnel nearby at all...

12:18 just now learning Bethesda is near DC and that petty theft happens.

@ 12:18 - The OP is not suggesting that the police should not arrest shoplifters. S/he is saying that it is good news that shoplifting is the most serious issue that they have to deal with in Bethesda right now.

Constant vilification replaced by a single attaboy. Lame.

8:05 agree. This is good news!

They were all released, which means they won't show up for court and they will soon be at another grocery store.

12:18 we've had multiple gun robberies and at least two discharges that I'm aware of. What 'slice of time' do you wish to sample?

Great to hear, now have them (2D) do a ticket giving, outstanding warrant checking and arresting all the illegal to smoke weed out in public places entitled scofflaws in ALL the green spaces and public parks in and around Bethesda -Chevy Chase area, especially in close proximity to those weed shops and smoke shops!!!

But Cher wasn't a serial organized shoplifter of food!

12:18. You spoke too soon! Overnight maybe 20 more "discharges,' this time one grazing hit reported. Any bets on first fatality? My money says this hot summer Bethesda will be in the victim big leagues

Exactly, and will rack up numerous outstanding warrants that won't ever be served.

It's already in my bingo card!

Meanwhile us hard earning citizens have to go in like normal people and purchase items. Why don't we all just steal and not pay.....

Too bad the perps were AT the O.K. Corral on the losing end!
