Trader Joe's construction begins at new downtown Bethesda location

Construction has begun this morning at the new Trader Joe's location at 7900 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda. The popular grocery store will be the anchor retail tenant at JBG Smith's new 8001 Woodmont mixed-use development. That building has been scheduled for a Q3 2021 delivery. Trader Joe's is currently located at 6831 Wisconsin Avenue.

Will the TJ’s remain at 6831 Wisconsin?

10:33: Highly unlikely. Trader Joe's has never officially commented on the matter, but the assumption is that the other store will close when the new one is ready.

I hope they keep both stores. It'll prevent overcrowding and they are on opposite ends of Downtown Bethesda.

Trader Joe's did put some money into renovations for the existing Bethesda store. They added new windows and redid the aisles to improve traffic flow. I'd doubt they do that if they intended to close it, but I could be wrong.

I have not been to the current Bethesda location. The crowded narrow aisles were not an incentive to go. Hopefully this one has a better layout. Learning

@11:22 AM - Those fixes were simply cosmetic for them. Don't get too comfortable with that location, you'll soon be disappointed/

I contacted the building a few days ago and they indicated that the grocery won’t likely be opening until next Spring! Here’s what they said:

“ We do not have a finalized date of when the grocery retailer will be opened. Hopefully by spring of 2022 but we do not have an official timeframe!”

The current bethesda TJ's is the highest grossing store in the DC area. Lots of DC residents shop there. I suspect that they will run both stores for a while to see if there's enough demand for both. The area could possibly support both stores.
